Hw Origin of Hymns.
i"The origin of hymns is not romantic,"
says Dr. Louis F. Benson, "Master
of hymn lore" and the greatest
bymnologist in the country, who has
made a life study of the subject, and
who, during thirty-five years has
made a collection of 8;(K)0 volumes of I
hymns and books concerning church
song. In an interview with Isabella
Hastie Smith, writing for the Continent
(Presbyterian), ! he told how
Charlotte Elliott wrote "Just as I Am"
when she was ill and discouraged;

came from a little book of European
times. To the writer?
"Dr. Benson explained that many
erroneous stories have been told of
the origin of familiar hymns. A popplar
fable is about the writing of j

ays that Charles Wesley was stand- j
ing by a window watching a dove and :

to Thee,' but Rev. Ray Palmer, who
wrote the hymn in 1830, according to
his own account, felt great emotion:

That hymns are often written for ;
special occasions is demonstrated by \
'O Little Town of Bethlemen,' by i
t: Phillips Brooks, and 'From Green-J
land's ley Mountains.' Bishop Brooks ;
wrote this hymn for a Christmas festival,
and the music was wirtten by a
Philadelphian, Lewis H. Redner. A
strain of music came to Mr. Redner
one night, a few days before the
hymn was to be sung. He seemed to
hear it sung, he told Dr. Benson, and
immediately wrote it down. The missionary
hymn wmawritten for a spec|?

_ of his brother-in-law by Reginald He^
ber in 1819. Heber was afterward a
bishop. The original manuscript of

People Should Drink More Waler.
A large number of people suffer illhealth
through neglecting to drink the
daily requisite quantity df fluid
Women especially are apt to disregard
the necessity for using water i
and ether fluids as tissu^ builders.
It is estimated that about twothirds

oS water. Every day the tissues require
water to repair waste. There1

Loss of flesh is sometimes caused
by under drinkiDg, and too much
liquid predisposes to obesity. The
absorption of water is not performed
by the stomach but by the intestines, j
The influence of water upon the stomach
is slight, and there is not conclu- j
sive evidence that water dilutes the
gastric fluid.
Many persons think that they are
assisting the process of digestion by
eating their meals "dry." Half a pint
or even a larger quantity of water
cannot retard digestion, and it has
been shown that the work of the digestive
organs is aided by a glass of
light ale 6r thin wine.

injurious products from the system.
An under-supply of water is a contributing
factor to gout and digestive
disorder.
Some extremists among the advocate*
of vegetarianism have argued
that if plenty of fruit or vegetables
are eaten there is no need for liquid.
We find, however, that the herb feeding
animals even in most pastures
still seek water and die unless they
can find it.
Water in sufficient quantity cannot
be supplied to the human body
through food alone. V?e need about
, three pints of fluid daily. If our
labor is severe enough to cause profuse
excretion through the pores of
the skin, a larger quantity of drink is
| essential.
The practice of drinking half a pint
of hot water before the first meal in
the day is a simple but effective preventitive
of some of the common ailments
of the digestive systeip. Part

consist of pure water. The dangers
of tea and coffee have been exaggerated.
and if these beverages are
agreeable there is very little risk in
tneir moderate use. No doubt many
people drink too much strong tea.
Weak tea that is not unduly hot is
practically harmless, to the average
adult. The danger in narcotic beverages
is in the immoderate use of too
hot and too strong decoct ons.
One reason why many persons do
not drink enohgh is that they do not
like plain water and have a very
limited number of substitutes. Some
teetotalers drink no other fluid t1"
tea. There are many palatable liquid
' besides ordinary water or alcoholic
and narcotic fluids. In summer it is
a wholesome custom to drink lime or
lemon juice in mineral or plain water.
More use might be made of natural
mineral waters. The gas contained
in these assists degestion. The sweetened
artificial mineral waters are
more likely to produce acid, but the
sugar in them has some nutritive and
restorative value.
