Farmers to Meet in Columbia
Columbia, Aug. 12.?The Governor
of every southern state has been invited
to attend a conference to be held
in Columbia on Wednesday, Aug. 25,
at which time matters of vital importance
to everybody in the South will be
discussed. The conference has been
called by J. Skottowe Wannamaker,
president of the American Cotton Association,
and R. C. Hamer, president
of the South Carolina Division of the
Association.
The state-wide cotton meeting which
was to have been held in Columbia on
Aug. 38 has been postponed until Aug.
25 and will be held the same day as
the conference with the governors of
the southern states. Some of the governors
will be asked to address the
meeting. Every effort is also being
made to bring Secretary of Agriculture
Meredith here for the meeting.
Messrs. Wannamaker and Hamer
said today that the conference and
meeting on Aug. 25 would be one of
the most important ever held in the
South. They declared that a matter
that vitally affected everybody in the
South would be discussed.
The state-wide cotton rally which
will also be held on Aug. 25 will receive
reports from the recent campaign
conducted over the state to increase
the membership in the association,
to secure funds for the erection
of warehouses and the employment of
the cotton graders. A trophy cup will
be awarded the county which made the
best showing in the campaign. Reports
received from the campaign indicate
that it has been a mosi wonderful
success, it was said at the head
quarters of the state association here
today. The state warehouse commission
is flooded with requests for plans
for warehouses, and Clemson College
is flooded with requests for cott?n
graders. The membership of the cotton
association has been very male rially
increased. The campaign wi'l
close Monday, Aug. 16, meetings having
been held in practically every
county ;ii the State.
