Developing a profitable fishing in- j,
dustry, and marketing ocean food fish t
from a brine-pickled pool of constant- ?
ly varying salinity and water levels,1 s
far below the level of the oceans and
in the midst of a blazing desert, is an c
accomplishment of man that is worthy
of attention. This newest of American
fisheries, which has recently com- *
manded the attention of both state ^
and Federal scientists, is in the Salton , ^
Sea of southern California, where the
industry has grown up under some of ?
the most adverse ana extraordinary ^
conditions existing in any fishing en- ^
terprise.
The Salton Sea is one of the most
mysterious of all the world's inland j *
brine pools. With its surface at this j
writing 257 ft. below ocean 'evel. and *
its waters at times approaching six- | s
fold the salinity of sea water, it has
often been termed the Dead Sea of *
America. It is the lowest body of j 1
water on the face of the western hemi-;*
sphere, and the lowest on earth with ; *
the exception of the Dead Sea of 11
Palestine.
Little is known of the fish life of *
the Salton Sea prior to the last break o
in the Colorado River dikes. It is def- j s
initely known, however, that at the r
time the sea was something like six 1
times as salty as ocean water, and J t
this fact alone would have precluded F
the possibility of fish living in its ?
waters. In 1905, the river overflowed r
its banks, cutting two channels to the v
Salton Sea which are now known as i
the New and Alamo rivers. The flood t
carried 160,000,000 cu. ft. of water v
which it emptied into the Salton Sea, s
freshening the water, raising its level, o
and greatly extending its area. t
Several years after the flooding of t
the Salton Sea, the salt water mullet, n
a desirable food fish, of the identical o
pedes found in the Gulf of Califor- r
nia, and other Pacific waters from tl
Monterey southward, made its appear- o
ance in the sea. Two theories are ad- c
v&nced by scientists to account for o
the occurrence of the fish. The first w
is that they had swum from the Gulf e
f California into the fresh waters r
of the Colorado River, and were a
carried down into the Salton Sea by tl
the flood. This theory, however, does a
not seem acceptable, inasmuch as the d
fishermen declare there is no authen- p
tic record of the salt-water mullet e
iwimming up into fresh water v
streams. The second theory, and the S
more plausible one, is that the Salton *
Sea was stocked with fish by the white I ft
pelicans. These great birds inhabit _
the sea by tens of thousands, rearing
thefr young on the several volcanic s

In a short time a considerable colony
of fishermen began to appear on
he shores of the Salton Sea. Ex>eriments
by several large packing

25 degrees, the fish are iced aboard
he fishing boats as soon as they are
aken from the water. The fishermen

Just what the future of the Salon
Sea fishing industry will be, no

supply. If the Salton Sea
hould ever again attain the degree
f salinity that it possesed prior to
he flood of 1905, it is probable that
he fishing industry would be autolatically
terminated by the perishing
f the fish. The fishermen and old
esidents about the sea, however, scolf
he idea that the sea will ever go dry,
r even recede to the point of inrasing
salinity beyond the endurance
f the fish. They believe that the
rater is now holding its own against
vaporation losses. Last year the sea
eceded 4% ft, and then without any
pparent reason rose again 2 ft. With
he constantly increasing irrigated
rea of the Imperial Valley and the
evelopment of additional irrigation
rojects along the Colorado River, an
ver-increasing volume of over-flow
rater will be drained into the Salton
lea to freshen its waters and mainain
