ments are being made at the bureau j
of standards on a large-caliber ma- j
chine gun, from which bullets are pro- j
pel led at a high rate by centrifugal i
force. The weapon is practically
soindless in operation, and if perfect- I
ed will have a revolutionary efect i
upon the use of small arms in modem
warfare.
The gun consists of a rotating barrel
with a bore of approximately onehalf
inch. This barrel is attached to
a shaft which is caused to rotate by
motor driven gears at varying speed.
The projectiles which are one-half
inch caliber and spherical in form,
are fed into lihe gun by an automatic i
feed, obtaining a speed, or muzzle ,
velocity, of approximately 920 foot
seconds at 8,000 revolutions per minute
of the gun barrel, 1,135 feet per
second at 10,500 revolutions and 1,210
feet per second at 11,000 revolutions
per minute.
The penetration of the projectile is
about seven inches of pine wood at
I,2(0 feet per second at a distance of
six inches from the muzzle of the
rifle. The gun can maintain a rate

Columbia, June 29.?Reports received
at the headquarters of the
stats-wide expansion campaign of the
South Carolina Development Board
covering the past week indicate success
for the movement Some of the
distncts were not able to complete
thei:- canvass within the time originally
set and they will continue their
enrollments of members and pledging
of support for some days longer. .
The one outstanding fact in connection
with the drive, according to tie
members of Governor Cooper's state
committee, is that wherever earnest'
active work has been done by the
committees, they have been completely
successful. This indicates, the commpmhors
env that the citizens
are irtrongly behind the plan for the
development of the State's resources
as outlined l>y the development board.
One of the important incidents of the
campaign has been the strong sopport
given by the cotton mill men.
In several manufacturing centers
mill owners hsve readily agreed that
their support of the undertaking
should be on the basis of one cent per
spincle.
In accordance with its announced
intention of making markets and marketing
the first of its large projects,
the development board has already
commenced an intensive study of the
subject with a view to adopting a
workable plan for South Carolina and
putting it into operation at once.
Walter G. Braden, president of the
National Community Market Associaticn,
and T. Park Hay, Jr., manager
of the markets bureau of the Birmingham
Chamber of Commerce, have
been in consultation with the board
officers the past week. It is hoped to
have several of the proposed home
cash markets organized and operating
in time to care for the fall crops.
