NEE FOR PRESIDENT WILL
BE CLOSELY GUARDED
From. the moment that Senator
/ Warren G. Harding of Ohio was nominated
by the Republican convention
at Chicago, June 12th, for president
of the United States until he is either
declared defeated at the November
elections or in case he is successful
until he finishes his term of office in
the White House he will be as closely
guarded as if he were already the
chief executive of the land.
Hardly had the hurrah of the conj
ivfention died away, the hum of voices
subsided, and the applause ceased,
when the Ohio senator became, next
to the President, the most highly
prized and valuable man within its
confines. From the ro'e of an ordinary
citizen he instantly became
f clothed with ail the importance that
attaches to a nominee for the presidency.
The first thing he did to separate
a himself from the ordinary mass of
people was to hurriedly take a specYf
ial train and on that special train a
private car to Washington. But few
knew in advance of this special train's
movements?among them Senator
Lodge and perhaps a dozen other close
personal and political friends of Senator
Harding, and still fewer knew
that on this special train there was
a private car in which rode the nominee
of the convention and the members
of his immediate family.
On this train closely secreted was
a guard of secret service men ready
for anything that might happen, and
upon its arival in Washington it was
this same advance guard of pathfinders
which looked for any stray assassins
or others who might be inclined

made their way through the big gates |
at the union station and cut a road j
through the crowd which had gather-1
ed to witness Senator Harding's re-'
turn, they were closely followed by!
the Republican nominee himself.
Just in front and folotving him close- j
ly were well known plain clothes men, j
, who had gotten on their jobs at Chi-1
cago the instant Harding was declar-;
ed the nominee, and who will prob- i
ably serve in this capacity for many J
months, and possibly years, in the j
r event of a Republican victory this!
year.

merited persons, and while at his
home, at his office at the capitol and
when he returns to Marion, Ohio,
there will not be a moment of the day
or night when this .vigilance will to
the slightest degree be lessened.
When Roosevelt, Taft and Wilson
were nominated the same thing was
done, and although even after they
became president they did not know
it always, there was never a long
trip nor one of a half dozen blocks
from the White House where the secret
service men, on the lookout for
trouble, were not iu uc awuuu.
For the next week the new nominee
of the Republican party will be in
Washington, conferring with leading
members of his party, then he will
slip away to his Ohio home to remain
until the campaign takes him
from place to place this summer.
William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt,
William Howard Taft and Woodrow
Wilson were so different in their
personal likes and ways that the secret
service men quickly discovered a
difference in them, that is, those who
had been attached to the White House
for a long period of years.
McKinley was said to be much too
friendly with strangers and never
would have been shot had he observed
reasonable caution. As it was, his assassin
got in his deadly work with
one hand wrapped in a handkerchief.
Roosevelt many times lost his sef
cArvirp men in the wilds of Rock
Creek park as he wouki make a dash
up one of its steep hillsides or jump
into the water and swim across.
Nothing pleased him better.
Before he became ill it was often
President Wilson's plan to run out of
the White House door, jump into a
waiting auto and hike for Chevy
Chase golf links, but invariably he
lost and his guards overtook him before
he had gone many blocks.
From now on, wherever Senator
Harding goes he will be closely followed
by a corps of the best secret
sendee men which money can get,
working in relays to prevent sudden
attacks from unexpected sources.
