"Codling, my dear?that is the sys*em
we are to employ with Cousin
Koylaton. The men ail like it."
T* he really a cousin?" inquired
Prudence Blake of her sister, a spin
xer nit? nerseu, inougn i*ru jrau nn
lenior.
"Weir, maybe third or fourth, renoved,
but he hasn't many of near kin.
and It Is probubl.v because of our relationship.
distant though it may be.
that he has chosen our home to reerutt
his health In."
"Why. Is he an invalid?" questioned
the seemingly artless Prudence.
"No, but he has been a victim of the
prevailing grip epidemic and his doctor
said a few weeks' convalescence
away from business cares was necea
aary."
"Tea, we must be helpful and kind
to the sick and weak." sighed Prudaoee
pathetically.
Ton mean we must seize all golden
opportunities," reported Dorcas tartly,
valuing the simpering platitudes of
ar sister at their true worth. "Cousin
Rayiston ia a man of means, a comparatively
young man, and?who
knows?" And Dorcas prepared to put
her coddling system into practical
operation, and Prudence hunted up

Ward Roylstoo heaved a sigh of relief
antldpatingly of coveted peace and
rest u he reached the isolated town
of Clyde.
"You do not look very well. Cousin,"
were the first encouraging words of
Dorcas. "Our brother Kara has Just
received his medical diploma and he
will call to look you over."
"Why, I am not sick," said Roylaton.
We never know In a case Uki
yours," observed Dorcas In a dolorous
tone. "They say the after effects art
sometimes very severe. But you will
lave at hand faithful nurses."
Roylstoo made a wry face, unobserved
by his officious relatives, when
he sat down to his first meal. He was
hungry as an ox. but cream toast, thin
gruel and a single poached egg were
proffered him.
"Brother is very strict as to the
alimentary regime," droned Dorcas
"Prudence be sure that Cousin Royi ton's
room Is ventilated just right and
a warming pan pressed between the
beets before he retires '* And then
use Brother Ezra, a cadaverous
young man who gloomily kept his eye
en Roylston as though he was analyzer
him with view to protracted medical
treatment
"I shall send over some medicine in
the morning," he announced sepulchralty,
"a few gargles and lotions/
and he left a phial of pellets which
Boylstoo promptly tossed out of the
window when he reached his room
In the morning there arrived a pack
age of counter-irritants, lotions and
the like, and all that day the sisters
watched Roylston with an assiduity
and vehemence that nearly drove him
wild. To cap the climax, after dart
Dorcas solemnly tendered a little
package.
"A blister Brother Ezra sent," she
explained. "Drastic he says, bul
rare to prove beneficial. Prudence and
I will sit up to night. Cousin Roylston
and you must promptly call us if yoi
feel any bad symptoms. The after effects
of the fatal grip must be warded
off. you know."
"Grip," muttered Roylston, as he
reached his room. "Of all the busy
bodies. The only grip I am Interested
In h> this," and he opened his single
"* piece of baggage and proceeded tc
pack It. "I'll make my escape before
they poison me. If I have to jumf
from the window.**
That was Jast what Roylston had to
do an hour later. Gazing thence h?
observed the reflection of a light In a
lower room. He. could not leave th?
house that way, without apprizing his
Jailers. He dropped his grip from the
window, followed with the aid of a
trellis and made tracks speedUy.
Roylston turned from the house and
town. His Idea was to seek the first
safe shelter that presented. At the
end of a flve-mile tramp, wearied and
forlorn, turning a bend in the road h?
came upon a horse and wagon at a
standstill. A shapely, golden-hatred
girl was mending the broken harness
musically upbraiding and then petting
the steed, who had attempted to rue
away.
Boylston came chivalrously forward
and assisted her in getting things tc
rights, casually explaining his quesl
foe some settlement or roadside inn.

But Ward Roy Is ton was destined t<

Daniels for the rest of his prescribed
vacation. A bluff, hearty, even-minded
Id man, the father showed htm th<
beauties and benefits of strengthening

chance meeting had solved all Wart
Roylaton's trouble, for when he wen
back to the city to look up his neg
