The Silver Shortage.
There is at present an immense
shortage of silver and at the same
time an unprecedented demand for it. '
One explanation for this unusual condition
lies in the fact that silver is
the standard employed in Oriental ,
countries and that the commercial
expansion now in progress be- ;
tween the West and the East is on the :
grand scale. For example, the increasing
volume of America's trade
with India and China calls for practi- <
cally unlimited supplies of the white
metal. Then again, in many countries
silver is more valuable in the mass
than when minted. On the continent
of Europe silver coins disappear like
magic, because it is more profitable to

them for ordina-y selling and buying.
The combined result of the scarcity
and the demand is necessarily to en- .
hance the price of the commodity. It
must therefore inure to the benefit of
silver mine owners everywhere. The
United States and Mexico furnish between
them nearly three-fourths of i
the world's yearly output of silver, j
but if report speaks truly they are
likely to have a strong competitor in
the deposits recently located in northern
British Columbia. Despite severe ;
winter conditions, prospectors and
miners, some on snow shoes and others !
in dog sleds, -warmed to the new .
mineral belt.
The rich strikes' reported to have
been already made on claims opened
for development only last summer be- 1
wilder the imagination. We read of
"native silver ir great gleaming slabs"
hoinc broueht to Anyox for exhibi- '
ti<m, of 7,000 tons of "high-grade ruby
silver" being sent to the smelters
from a single mine, of two men in one I
day putting $10,000 worth of silver
ore into sacks for shipment to Tacoma.
At one of the mines, reported to
be the biggest of its kind known to ,
exist, large tractors have to be used (
as transports for the ore. Besides 1
these boundless potentialities of grow- ]
iqg rich beyond the dreams of avarice, i
the traditional jewels of Golconda and
shawles of Cishmere hide their di- j
minished heads. ,
Sometimes, of course, these tall <
tales are mere traps for the unwary, 5
"springes to c*tch woodcocks," as Polonius
would put it, but in the present
? ? Ynntivp for misrepresentation <
seems to be absent, and the finds reported
are apparently well authenti
cated. Should these Canadian ore t
beds realize only half of what is "
claimed for them, the effect of such
large quantities thrown on the market J
will be to ease a highly straitened sit- j
uation and thereby tend to enable <
trade and commerce to flow once more j 1

about the middle of the month.

Notice is hereby given that, by the
rules of the Democratic Party of
South Carolina, all Democratic clubs
in the County of Williamsburg are
required to meet on Saturday, April
24th, 1920, at such time and place as
will be most convenient to them respectively,
for the purpose of reorganizing.
Each club at its meeting shall
elect a president, one or more vice
presidents, a secretary and treasurer,
and an executive committman, and
shall also elect delegates to the county
convention. There shall be elected
one delegate for every 25 members
and one delegate for a majority fraction
thereof, based upon the number
