POULTRY" HINTS.
Prepared by County Home Demonstration
Agent. Selection
Breed.
Be sure the male at the head of the
flock is pure bred.
There are three general classes of
poultry?general purpose breeds, egg
breeds and meat breeds. In the gen
eral purpose class we find PlymouthJ
Rocks, Wyandottes, Javas, Domi- j
niques, Rhode Island Reds, and Buck-1
eyes. The egg breeds are Leghorns, J
Minorcas, Spanish, Blue Andabusians,:
and Anconas. The meat breeds in- J
:lude the Brahmas, Cochins and Lang- |
shans. No one breed can be said to :
be the best. It is really a matter of i
jne's own personal choice. The point .
is to have healthy, vigorous poultry,,
and the first consideration is to have j
pure bred stock. It means a more
iniform product and more profit if
narketed properly.
Hatch Early.
Early spring is natures most fa-: (
vorable time for growth. Chicks j
latched in the early spring have the j,
idvantacp nf this crowine season and j
x longer growing period than those | (
xatched in the late spring. To show i 1
vhat the result may be, we may com-1
pare the weights of two chicks four
nonths old, but one is hatched the
irst of March and the other the first
>f May. Both have received the same
are and attention. The March chick j (
it four months weighs more than the .
Hay chick when it is four months old.!
fanuary, February and March are the | ^
>est months for hatching in this sec-j j
ion. If none of your hens are broody , ,
ret some from a neighbor or use an j
ncubator. By September, October, J
>r November the early hatched chicks
rill have developed into mature pulets,
and these pullets will be pro- i
lucing eggs. At this season of thej?
rear the hens are molting. When i
tens molt they do not lay many eggs.'
Vhen eggs are high they bring tow-!
ring prices. So we can depend on j
he early hatched chicks to solve the ;
iroblem of the scarcity of eggs in the
all. 1
1
Millions of late hatched chicks die <
very year because the hot weather <
etards their growth. They are more
ubject to lice than the early chicks, ,
ind when fall comes on it is late (
latched chicks that are more subject
o roup.

good application about the head and Eg
neck and under the wings. A little ^
should be sprinkled in the nest Select
a quiet place for the nest. Re- s|
move the broody hen from her laying g
nest at night and place her on the gi
nest where she is to sit. Place one or ?
two china eggs under her and enclose ||
nest with a board. Late in the after- ||
noon of the next day place some water ||
and grain?corn or wheat?near the |$
nest and remove the board inclosing ||
the hen. If the hen returns to the
nest after eating, she may be given a
sitting of eggs. Allow her to leave kg
the nest every day for food and water, j|g
being sure she returns before the eggs S&
are chilled. Immerse the eggs in
warm water for two minutes a few |??
days before they hatch. More eggs Sp
wlli hatch by doing this. At this time Sg
the hen should again be dusted with |g
insect powder. is
First Care of Baby Chicks.
The first requirement of young
chicks is warmth. If brooded by hen j ||
they remain under the mother for two i &
or three days. Young chicks should :a|
be fed nothing for at least twenty- ||four
hours after being hatched. Scat- ||
ter a little sharp sand in the pen.
On the second day begin feeding with ?
the following: &
2 hard cooked eggs?chipped fine. ?
2 handfuls rolled oats.
1 handful hominy.
M handful sharp sand. rJ?;"
Blend thoroughly. Feed sparingly |j?
of this every three hours. The secand
day alternate with a little hominy ||
scattered in the litter. After the |?
fourth day give wheat shorts. But- g}
termilk or clabber can be mixed with jgg
the shorts sometimes.
Rub-My-Tisra is a great pain
killer. It relieves pain and soreness
caused by Rheumatism. '
Neuralgia, Sprains, etc.
