11 GOOD ROADS SAVE GAS
I 1
Trucks I'se Twice as Much Fuel on,
Dirt Highways, Test Shows
i
j . [From the Columbus Dispatch]
!= j That good roads cut the cost of,
I gasoline more than 50 per cent, is J
P stated by "Freight Transportation Di- j
gest." A loaded 2-ton truck was usetl1
j|' in a test and in running 100 miles on
| an earth road consumed 17.3 gallons
^ I of gasoline, making an average of:
Bj 3.78 miles a gallon. The cost figured:
at 25 cents a gallon was $4.33. t no ,
same truck was used on a concrete J
j| load and traveled the same distance
^ on 8.49 gallons of gasoline, making
g 11.78 miles per gallon.' The cost in
= this case, based on the same basis,
= was $2.12. The net savings in cost
P of gasoline on the improved highway
p was therefore $2.21, or more than 100
B per cent.
jg Statisticians could step in here and
conjure a colossal sum to represent
5 the savings in gasoline cost if all the
J highways of the United States were
paved. They could, for instance, asp
sume that all of the half million moI
tor-trucks in the country were two?
ton trucks, and on this basis figure
out a saving in gasoline costs equal
S to a couple of Liberty Loan issues,
gg This enormous reduction in gaso j?
line costs, coupled with the ability to
I handle larger loads with less attractive
effort, has become one of the
strongest arguments for good roads.
The two tests cited in this instance
show conclusively that poor roads are
expensive to the fanner and merchant
alike. The farmer who hauls with a
motor-truck is getting only one-eighth
I of the profit he could get and the
merchant and inter-city freight truck
operator is paying out twice what they
should for gasoline and are getting
only one-eighth of .the profit they
could get.
Cured of Leprosy
Honolulu, Feb. 6.?Forty-eight persons
in Hawaii aflicted with leprosy
were cured during 1919 according to
the statement of Dr. J. T. McDonald,
attending physician at the Kalihi leprosy
investigation station in Honolulu.
The produces used in treating the
disease, said Dr. McDonald, are refined
from a vegetable oil by Dr. A.
L. Dean of the College of Hawaii.
The surgeon general at Washington
has asked for a detailed description
of the work for publication in the j
United States health report, and this:
is now being prepared.

WHILE MOTHERS FIGHT
Poor Little Helpless Babies Suffer?
One Dead Other Bu'nn!
Last week The Record told of a
peculiar case in Atlanta which relate*!
to the identity of two babes and two
mothers. The babes had in some way
gotten mixed. One was more attractive
than the other. Each of the wcnin
claimed maturnity of brown-ryed
I.ouise Madeline ar.d neither claimed
the motherhood of blue-eyed Mary
Elizabeth.
Fate took a hand last Friday in the
tangled claims to blue-eyed Mary
Elizabeth and brown-eyed Louise
Madeline, 8-months-old babies, over
whom the mothers were going to
court, when pneumonia claimed Mary
Elizabeth, whom neither mother wanted,
and Louise fell into an open grate
sustaining burns on her face that ?*
physicians said might prove fatal or I
mar her looks for life. I
The children were born the same I
day at the Grady Hospital here and j
Mrs. John C. Gamer recentlv an- j
nounced that the blue-eyed child given J
her was not her own. She claimed !
Louise Madeline, as the brown-eyed I
girl is known. Mrs. Daniel L. Pittman, j
to whom nurses at the city institution j
gave the brown-eyed child, maintain- j
ed it was her very own.
Mrs. Gamer first offered to take j
both children to he sure she had her I
own and later sought habeas corpus I
proceedings, which were set for hear- j
ing Saturday. Mary Elizabeth, whom j
Mrs. Gamer had been rearing, had |
been ill for several days and her {
death, which wes not so unexpected, f
came on the very day that the other I
tot scarred herself for life. I
