Tax Dodgers Paid Large Sura
Approximately $400,000,00 was collected
fr>m income tax-dodgers last
year, it is learned at the Treasury
Department in Washington as first
returns began to come in from the
filing of returns onJ9I9 incomes.
An equal or larger sum will be collected
this year, Internal Revenue
Bureau officials predicted.
"additional tax" nearly equals
the loss in revenue to the government
from prohibition.
"Additional tax" is the phrase used!
by Treasury officials to avoid the J
term "tax-dodgers." Part of the money i
collected came from persons who had I
no intention of defrauding the government,
it was explained. Many corporations
filed incorrect returns because
they misinterpreted the tax
regulations, officials declared.
An entire section of the Internal
Revenue Bureau was required, however,
to discover the mistakes. Several
hundred clerks are employed in
this section here. In addition, a large
staff of special investigators is in the
field checking over persons with memberships
in expensive clubs, owners of

' sioner Daniel C. Roper to carry on :
the investigation work. It was begun
about a year ago. The investigators
worked on returns covering incomes
received in both 1918 and 1917. From
now until July 1 the investigators
will work on the 191S returns. After
that the returns for income received

Secretary Daniel to prohibit the ex-!
port of helium, a non-inflammable
gas used for filling military balloons i
and dirigibles. Mr. Daniels proposed
that five years' imprisonment and a 1
$5,000 fine be imposed for violation
of the export ban. "The demand for
heliam abroad is insistant," said the
Secretary, "and great enough to consume
the available supply in this
country in a short time."
