very well said to himself on that or
casion that he "could not afford" tc
remain where he was. a target for the
whole German army, f
He could have very easily placed
himself in the attitude some people
have taken toward the Liberty lodtis
and the War Savings campaign. He

a Yankee non-com. but he didn't trj
to shirk any responsibility.
It happened near Verdun, in the 27
day battle of the Argonne. The regi
meat to which the corporal belonged
was pretty badly shot up. The Huns
had thrown out smok? screens and
were attacking the Americans hard
The lone soldier wa^ falling bach
with the others when he sighted ^dis
abled French tank and a German ma
chine gun. He planted that Hue
rapid flrer in the French tank and gol
busy. From his station he command
ed a hill top over which the Boche
must advance. As they came on it
battalion formation he "swept then
down" to use his own words, "like haj
in front of a sickle."
He had no one w?th him to feed
that unfamiliar machine gun. remem
ber. The water jacket on the gur
boiled dry from the stream of bullets
that kept spurting into the Germaa
masses He emptied his canteen oi
water into the jacKet ana cooiea u
off a bit. and went methodically tc
work again, killing Germans. All th?
time he was firing German cartridges
collected from behind the tank.
He was on the job and doing wha)
he had been trained to do. and whal
America sent him over to do. Final
ly the Huns called for a barrage te
get that lone gunner in the smashed
tank. They sent over something like
200 six-inch shells in an effort to put
him and that gun out of action
"None landed." he reports.
That sort of American spirit il
needed now to make the coming gen
eration a prosperous and thrifty one
To make America solid before thi
world for all time to come, each om
of us must "stand his ground" and de
his part in this werk of reconstruc
tion.
