er's Association, the State Department
of Agriculture, and the Railroad
Administration are joining hands
in a campaign to demonstrate the
reclamation, clearing, and profitable
utilization of lands in the lower part
of the state. Nearly 11,000,000 acres
of cut-over lands, undrained lowlands,
and other waste acres in South
Carolina are awaiting development,,
and it is believed that this campaign
will do much to start the development
of these acres.
To carry forward the work proposed,
a trainload of nine cars of
machinery and men will demonstrate
by actual field work the value of
machinery and other power in draining
and clearing land and otherwise
improving it for practical farming.
Plans are being arranged also to have
samples of good farm fencing and
fence posts on exhibit and possibly
an actual demonstration of good
fence construction; and probably also
exhibits of practical electric light
and rural telephone systems.
The train and demonstrations will
be in active charge of the Extension
Service of Clemson College and there
will be a full corps of specialists and
j experts from the Extension Service
and from the organizations which
are cooperating.
Nine stops will be made by this
land development train as follows in
the coastal plain section of the state:
Allendale, October, 14, Orangeburg,
October, 16, Fores ton, October, 18.
Florence, October 21, Mullins, October,
23, Andrews, October. 25, Mt.
Holly. October, 28, Stokes, October
30, Beaufort, November 1.
