TOWER OF LONDON
TO HOLD E.V-KA1SER
Wilhelm 11. To Be Jailed In White
Tower During Trial. Walls Are
15 Feet Thick
London, July 12.?"Tower of London
receives the Ex-Kaiser." At
sonic time in the not distant future
we may expect, it appears, to read
this headline, in staring capitals.'
across the front page of o.ir morn-,
ing pane:. Some tine day we Arneri-I
cans who make our temporary homes |
here, will join the vast crowd that;
assuredly v. ii! gather to try to snatch
u glimpse of V.'iihelm 11, or. his way
to confinement in the grim stronghold
in which so many famous figures
of the past dragged down from
their high t. talc, languished in captivity
and met their death. ;
And, a few days later, we may
again be struggling for a point o:
vantage in the throng that will line j
the streets of this metropolis through!
which the Ex-Kaiser is conveyed'
from the Tower to Westminister
\ Ha'l, or the iCoyai L;ourTs 01 ousuce i
or the prim Old Built by William'
the Conqueror in 1078 decided that
the "Butcher of Berlin" shall stand
his trial for the crime against law
and humanity with which he stands
charged.
For, ; as all the world knows, it
has now been announced authorita-;
tively that the Kaiser, on being sur-1
rendered by Holland, will be brought)
to England for trial, and that the
Tower of London will be his place
of confinement. This would be sufficient
in itself to center world-wide'
interest once again upon the famous
fortress, prison and former royal
palace whose long history is stained
with so much human blood, and'
which so many American travelers
have visited at one time or another.
Now, however, comes the additional
announcement that the principal
German army and naval commanders
who will be charged with specific
atrocities on land and sea soon
as the peace treaty is ratified, are
also to be confined in the Tower and
that arrangements are now being
made for their reception there, "at
f an early date."
The Kaiser, it is stated, will be
imprisoned in the White Tower,
which is the great central building
of the historic fortress, and its old-.
est part. Built by William the Con-!
queror in 1078, it is a nearly square i
/..i. .
building, measuring xio ieti uvm t
east to west and 107 from north to i
south. At the corner are turrets, j
three square and one circular. The j
walls in the lower part are 15 feet'
thick, decreasing to 11 feet in thei
upper story. Its main floor and its
famous dungeons were opened to the
public only so recently as in 1916.
The main floor contained the private
apartments of William the Conqueror
and it is probably there that
William the Defeated will be housed.
Beneath, in the crypt leading to the
dungeons, 45,000 rifles used to be
stored?representing London's chief ;
preparation for mobilization. It was
in the White Tower that Sir Walter
Raleigl. was confined previous to his
execution at Westminister, and in the
stonework of its winding stairway
that the bones were discovered of
the little princes who were done to
death in the adjacent Bloody Tower,
by order of Richard III.
Arrangements are now being made
to fit up-the White Tower for occu,
pancy by the Ex-Kaiser. Suitable
furniture will be provided and rooms
will also be set apart there for one
