.Shooting Affray at Denmark
There was a serious shooting of-;
fair at Denmark last Thi.rs ay in
which Henry M. Kay. Jas. R. Th? ripson,
and Carrol Mobley wer badly
wounded, two of the men probably
fatally wounded. Two negroes were
killed.
n7,d] Anderson, one of the negroes
alleged to have been implicated in
the .-hooting affray in which the negroes
were killed and three white
men were injured, was captured by
W. J. Hutto. chief of police of Denmark.
and placed in the State penitentiary
for safekeeping. Chief Hutto
captured Anderson about one and
three-quarter miles from Denmark
Friday morning. The negro was armed
with a Winchester rifle and was
partly drunk, said the officer. The
negro made no effort to resist arrest.
While there was a great deal of |
excitement because of the shooting,
said Mr. Hutto, there was no effort
at violence toward the prisoner, but
he thought it wise to take the negro
to Columbia. Mr. Hutto. who has
been chief of police at Denmark off
and on for the past fifteen years,
was an eye-witness of the shooting
affray.
According to his version a gang of
telephone workers were stringing
wires at Denmark when one of the
negro laborers. George Stevens, raided
the watermelon patch of Agent
Brown, another negro, who pursued
Stevens until they came up to the
white telephone workers, who pro^

took the matter to the magistrate's
court and Stevens was acquitted.
Carroll Mobley, a white man. being
the chief witness for the defendent.
When the party got outside of the
magistrate's court on the street, said
Mr. Hutto. some words, in his opinion.
passed and the shooting began.
He stated that Agent Brown commenced
firing at Mr. Mobley with an
automatic revolver, which held nine
steel-coated bullets. Two shots entered
the chest of Mr. Mobley, one
on the right anu the other on the
left, just below the heart. He then
turned and ran down the street, getting
behind an automobile and opened
fire on Brown, killing him. Brown
shot Henry M. Ray. a young white
man. aged 22,son of magistrate Ray,
through the back of the neck, para
lyzmg him. In the melee following
the firing of the first shots a negro
man from Marietta, Ga.. who was a
witness in the trial and who did not
participate in the affray, was killed.
Ozell Anderson, the brother-in-law
of Brown, who was with the latter
at the time of the affray, is said to
have shot J. Ralph Thompson, a
white man, aged 25, employee of the
telephone company, through the arm,
shattering the bone. Thompson is
a hospital. - -? -

Wilmington Bradley, familiarly
known about town as "Bunk", has
returned to his old job in The County
Record office. About 21 years ago
Mr. C. W.Wolfe, then editor of the
paper, employed him as roller boy
and errand runner and to do such
chores about the office as he could.

his work and did it well. He was dependable
and always on the job, and
later became the pressman of the office,
and for several years pulled the
olc! Washington hand press with the
. skill and efficiency of a Franklin.
In later years he has had charge of
the big cylinder and job presses
which supplanted the old hard and
foot powe>- machines, at the sametime,
acquiring a knowledge of the
plants gasoline or kerosene engine
that enabled him to get the best of
service out of these usually vexatious
mechanisms.
So, for 20 years Dunk remained
on his job. unmolested, and was regarded
as a permanent fixture of the
T^Cor.i plant when, all on account of
the hellishness of a race of ofheny.se
gieat ptcjle. he was drafted Into
the military service of his country.
S'?on after "leaving Kingstree he was
sent overseas as a member of an Engineering
unit, and for ten months
was engaged with his unit in road
work in France. Last Tuesday he returned
to Kir.gstree and on Thursday

shop, and we find him the same faithful,
efficient, dependable, quiet man- |
nerly old black faced boy that he
was before he was called to help
whip the huns. We are glad to have
him back.

Nominations Confirmed
The United States Senate on Tues- J
day confirmed the nominations of
Judge H. H. Watkins on t.ie federal
bench and Representative Lever to
be a member of the farm loan board.
It is not known just when Mr. Lever
will take up his new duties, but it is
understood to be August 1. Mr. Lever
has secured a home at Chevy
Chase, one of Washington's fashionable
suburbs, and will shortly move
there with his family.
