After Chappelle's Scalp.

The following is an editorial from
"The Light" a newspaper edited and
published by C. G. Garrett, a colored
man of Columbia. Many of our
readers will recall the incidents, no
doubt, to which the article has reference.
especially to the published
speech of Bishop Chappelle, urging
the negroes to register and vote. As
The Countv Record has hundreds of
good, honorable, law abiding colored
men among its great list of subscribers
we are reproducing the article
in order to show how Chappelle
and his political schemes and
ambitions are regarded by the better,
saner ?class of colored people in
the State.
The article from "The Light"
follows verbatim:
-UNFORTUNATE RUMOR"
"It is related that from some unfortunate
and foolish rumors an unpleasant
episode occurred at the
court house at Greenwood the first
Monday in April, when it was
thought or rumored that a lot of
Negroes were coming to register.
It is said that Kev. u. v>. vveou,
who went to the court to get his
wife's school claim cashed, was assaulted
and beaten up severely
about the head, and Mr. Marshall
was also beaten at the same time,
though neither was there to register,
but on other business they
claim. Of course other Negroes who
may have intended to register did
not show up. We guess and hope
the proper parties will feri-et out
the cause of the trouble and let the
law mete out justice. All good citizens
will agree on that We don't
know what offense Rev. Webb and
Marshall gave for the assault. We
don't think either was embuedwith
and led on by this fool talk of Bishop
Chappelle's that Negroes must
register and have their rights, to
vote for Chappelle's new party, the
Democratic splitters, or die. The latter
is easy to do, and will bo done
by innocent and unsuspecting Negroes
who think they must do whatever
a Negro bishop says, without
any recourse to law, or method of
defense. If Chappelle is in earnest
about bursting1 the Democratic party
and following the devil, we suggest
that he make a start at the
Greenwood court house or down in
Shadow Field section and he will
find his new leader very near.
"We are informed by responsible
men, white and colored, in the back
woods, that Chappelle's remarks
are hurled to the Negroes, and have
already stirred up much needless
strife. While the man is irresponsible
and foolhardy, his position as
a bishop over 100,000 Negroes,
gives weight and color to his saying,
and while his little pimpy

worked the Negro up to a high tension
as never before as to his rights
we are in a position to know that
the host of honest, consecrated,
God-fearing preachers of the state
will not be misled and wrought up
into racial Bolshevism by Chappelle
and a few little unregenerated, under-strappings
who is simply eeking
out a ministerial existence for
an appointment.
"We beg our white citizens and
friends not to be alarmed over this
hot headed Negro bishop's pronunciamento,
in his "state-wide conference"
and eclat for a new party.
He is following or planning to follow
white men, too. His name is
on file at Boodleville. While it is
true that the rank and file of the
self-respecting, tax paying negroes
want to enjoy every right vouchsafed
to him under he law, when
his qualifications as a man and a
citizen warrants his capacity to cope
and do in common with other citizens
the best for his state and country.
Thousands of us are praying,
working, struggling, and living for
that end, and whether far or near,
we know that we must build on
those elements, and undergo those
hardships common to mankind inal!

We are going by
God's help and our own industry
and good conduct, obedience to law
and order, and observance of the
golden rule, as far as we can, with
our steps forward and our faces to
the front, and when we fall short oi
the desired end, as other generations
have, we leave our children,
honest, trained and cultured, nearer
on the way than their fathers
were.
"Pitifully true, we have been, like
all other animals, bothered with an
unwholesome pest, the carpet-bagger,
the demagogue, the race traitor,
the fool speaker, ambitious big
talker and racial disturber, like this
man Chappelle, who takes advantage
of Episcopal authority and robe
to stir up racial strife, to work Negroes
up to a high tension, in order,
we believe to hand them over wholesale
to some white leaders for a
new party.

and timely instruction fail to reach

Don't knock our brains out to open
our eyes. Be merciful, or give us
to the law. We hope the good white
people of Greenwood will be considerate
of our short comings, and
especially the hard working, average
Negro. Don't drive us from you.
Let us come together and reason
out our relations under God and the
righteousness of our laws. If you
don't want us, why don't stain your
brave Saxon hands with the blood
of a harmless, foolish, defenceles:Negro.
Teach him better, or drive
him to other climes. Don't assault
him. The Negro will follow mosl
any kindly disposed white man,
even Chappelle, with the Negroes
feeding him, is following white
men. The Negroes, too. must act
with good sense and not be wrought
up by every fool big Negro, who
has nothing to lose but an appointment.
If Bishop Chappelle had tc
work and get his bread, by his own
honest labor, like the poor Negroes
he is trying to ill advise, he would
sine- another song than "fight till

like Chappelle who preaches amalgamation
of the races and who asserts
that, "I an sorry I am a
black man, wish I was white, I
wish my children were white. I am
sorry I am back. Amalgamation
will solve the problem." These are
his words, and plenty of Negroes
have heard him say so. Look up the
