If the southern farmer is to do his share in producing foods for man and ' beast, and, at the same time, grow cot, ton fibre for the nation, he must either increase his crop acreage, or else grow considerably more per acre than cus ternary In view^ of the scarcity and high price of labor at the present time, ft seems to be the part of wisdom Cor farmers generally not to materially increase the crop acreage, bat to increase the acre yields. ^ > - Increase Yield Per Acre ' Acre yields can be increased by hitter preparation of the seed bed, by ^ the use of good seed of rarieties adaptB ed to the region, by using a more libB oral application of the right kinds of W fertilizers and by better cultivation of r HIP |1UVIU| uvyo. While all of these factors influence acre yields, let us call particular at* , tentlon at this atlme to the kind and amount of fertiliser to be used. Practically all of the southern soils are v a, deficient in phosphoric acid, nitrogen and potash and these must be supplied I in some form to get the largest yields and biggest farm profits. While the ' proper use of these materials will increase the yields .per acre and help supply the nation's needs, the wise fanner will at the same time strive to get the largest financial returns , from their use. To do this, he must'1 exercise care in buying them as well as in applying them. The farmer should understand that plants use fertilizers as foods only after they have been dissolved by the soil water, and that which is not soluble is not available to the plant. It ' is to the fanner's interest, therefore, 1 to know that the fertilizers he is buy- > ing are guaranteed to contain a stated * amount of available plant food. i Price; Down i! For the best results in the cultivation of general field crops, materials carrying phosphoric acid, nitrogen and some potash should be applied. Potash is more deficient fn the light and . sandy soils than in clay soils. Not j less than 150 to 200 pounds of com-; plete fertilizers per acre should be j used and hundreds of farmers find ! more than this amount to be most | profitable. Fertilizers containing these ; necessary plant foods are generally essential for the most profitable produc- j tion of all field crops. Since there is | such a world-wide need for crops, and since farm products are higher now than ever before, it follows that the farmer who strives to fulfill the na- ; tlon's needs just now by the use of such nlant food as is necessary, se cures at the same time the largest pos- j Bible financial returns for himself. j American-Made Potash Good As German Kind If there is any doubt in the mind of a 'farmer about using fertilizers containing American-made potash, in the belief that it is not as good as that which was formerly obtained from Germany, his mind can be set at reat by any chemist or agricultural authority.j Any one who knows in what form the i potash exists in the American-made ; product will declare that muriate or: suflate of potash is the same to the plant whether It be obtained from . American sources or Germany, and that the plant asks no questions as to | where it originated, but feeds on It; just the same. Raise Home Supplies And Some To Spare "Store bought" foods and feeds are too high priced for any farmer to pay, j even if he could find them for sale, j The wise southern farmer will get in a crop of corn and velvet beans, pota toes, vegetables of various "Kinds, ?row a few hogs and poultry and otherwise look out for the needs of his family and his tenants. With a.11 of food products bringing such good prices, the southern farmer should do a patriotic bit if he would raise enough to spare some for the armies while ha is raising his cotton crop. i in fash Shire, li lr prices, along with the ARE NOT. This is the judgment of prominent government officials who visited Charleston in the middle of the month. One of the most significant utterances made during the entire war was made by a prominent German official when America cast her lot with the Allies: "We do not fear the American soldiers, because they cannot arrive In time; what we fear is the intelligence aad devotion of one hundred million Americans trained to a faith in individual initiative. The day that those hundred millions act as one, that day le Germany's doom!" Hastening the Doom. To enable the hundreds of millions of Americans to act as one is one of the main objects of the war savings plan which the government is instituting as a mighty weapon against Germany. That is the underlying object of the drive for war savings societies which la being pushed daftng thie month, and through which millions of Americans are expected to pledge themselves to stand pack of the army and navy by avoiding needless expenditures and thereby release the goods and services which are needed to equip the army and navy properly and efficiently. R. Goodwyn Rhett, state director for war savings, has issued the following statement: , "Joint the company of savers! Let a company of savers back every company of soldiers. The war savings committee of your county is carrying on a campaign this month for the formation of war savings societies. War Savings Societies make it easy for you to join with others in saving a portion of your earnings as they come in and Invest them in War Savings Stamps Every loyal man. weman, and child In South Carolina should Join a War Savings Society, not next week, but NOW. Let us respond patriotically to the government's call. Let us act as one. and bring nearer Germany's day of doom." w. s. ?. PATRIOTIC GIFTS VOGUE A Present That Lasts Five and Haifa Win the War. Save for your country's sake, beoause it is now spending millions a day. and must find most of the money out of savings. 2. Save for your own sake, because work and wages are plentifnl and, while prlees are high now, a dollar will buy more after the war. 3. Save beoauss, when 70a spend, you make ether people work for you, and flee work at everyone is needed sow to win the war. 4. Save because, by saving, yea make things cheaper for everyone, especially for those who are poorer than you. B. Save because, by going without you relieve the strain on ships, docks, and railways, and make transport cheaper and quicker. I. Save because, by saving, you set an example that makes H taster for the next man te save. A saving nation is an earning nation. 7. Save beoaust every time you save you help twice, flret Xh-^n you don't spend, and avain when you lend to the nation. \ I I i # = THE The Talking Ma-1 chine the World's Greatest Artists Choose to Reproduce Their Voices.
