these days in classifying the registrants
in accordance with the law
and the questionaires.
Census figures show that up to
December 13, 1917, ^4,915 bales of
cotton were ginned in Williamsburg
county, against 11,940 bales up to
the same time in 1915.
Sealed bids are called for by the
County Supervisor for -supplying the
county jail, chaingang and paupers
during 1918 with medical supplies
and physician's service. See ad in
this paper.
Rev Dr Walter Mitchell will officiate

Carlysle Myrick Dies in France.
The announcement of the death ;1

Myrick. member of the engineers!1
corps, came as a grievous shock to j!
the young man's host of friends;'

Carlysle. as he was familiarly i *
known here, came to Kingstree with j'
his uncle, C A Milhous. about eight1
years ago. When his uncle left 11
Kingstree to locate elsewhere, the i;
young man remained, and being an j1
honorable, industrious lad he wasj(
given employment by Mr W E Jen-1
kinson, as a clerk in his dry goodsj;
store. Here he remained till a call *
was issued for volunteers when he '
enlisted and was later sent to the 1
Mexican border, where he remained 1
until his company was mustered out '
of the service. He returned here
and took his old position in the Jen- '
kinson dry goods store and remain- J
ed there until he was called again j'
into the service of the government
upon the declaration of war against j(
Germany. The young man has a!(
host of friends here who read of (1
his death in the dispatch from Gen- j
eral Pershing's headquarters in 5

misdemeanor for anyone under 16;
years to drive a car, but by consent j |

The New Pastor of Kingstree Baptist
Church--Has Done Good Work.
The Rev E A McDowell, late of
Fairfax, arrived in Kingstree with
his family Friday, after being somewhat
delayed on account of the
poor transportation service that is
now being experienced by all who
travel.
Mr McDowell was here several
weeks ago and preached to the Baptist
congregation. Those who heard
and met him were favorably im

as a minister of the gospel. Later
be was offered the pastorate of the
:hurch here and accepted, he having
previously tendered his resignation
as pastor of a church at Fairfax to
take effect on January 1, this year.
This man of God and his good
tvife comes to the local Baptist
ihurch and to the people of Kingstree
with high endorsement. We
are glad to hcve them and assure
:hem that they will not find, anywhere,
a better place to live or a
iner people to be among than right
aere in Kingstree.
Mrs McDowell is a lady of culture,
possessed with a most pleasing personality,
and is a recognized worker
n the great field of religious enleavor.
Mr McDowell comes of a fine old
South Carolina family; he was edu:ated
at Furman University and the
Southern Baptist Theological semilary.
Has held several important
pastorates in the State, among the
not haincr at NiYPtv-Six and Fairfax.
Referring to hit? resignation at
Fairfax the State newspaper under
iate of September 24 contained the
following notice of his work there:
"The Rev E A McDowell, pastor
)f the Fairfax Baptist church, teniered
his resignation last Sunday
norning to take effect January 1.
L918. Mr McDowell has under confideration
other fields, but has not
/et decided where he will make his
future home. During the three

growth. From a constituency of
ess than 100. having twice a month
preaching, the church has developed
nto a more efficient body, supportng
a pastor for all of his time, ownng
free of debt a splendid church
plant, contributing systematically to
ill benevolences and having added

of strong friends in Fairfax and

regret his removal."
