The explosion of a can of gasoline
in the kitchen of T L Joye & CoV
cafe Saturday morning caused a;
small fire, which was soon extinguished.
The loss was slight.
Judge Mendel L Smitd of Camden
has been commissioned a major in
the army and will soon enter upon
his new duties. This will be very
gratifying to his many friends here.
Mrs W ENesmith and Miss Amanda
Edwards went to Latta to attend
the wedding of their brother, Mr E
Carl Edwards, to Miss lone Berry,
which took place at 5:30 p. m. yesterday.
County Treasurer R B Smith is
one of the busiest men in town now.
The people are rushing to pay their
taxes, realizing that there are only
j eight more business days before the
, penalty will be in torce.
j Farmers' Bulletin No 183, "Meat
: on the Farm," may be had by applying
at the office of home demonstration
work. This bulletin contains

curing and keeping meat.
Mr Joseph R Walker will arrive

Clyde Brown of Indiantown, who
was operated upon at the McLeod
infirmary, Florence. Tuesday, is in a
critical condition. The four-year-old
son of Representative S 0 Eaddy of
, Johnsonville is under treatment in

Mr Walter Poston of Leo was in
Kinpstree Saturday. Mr Poston informs
us that he has sold out his interests
at Leo, in Florence county,
and will soon return to Johnsonville.

Freight receipts at the depot here
during the first half of this month,
amounted to several thousand
dollars more than that of the whole
month of December, 1916, and so
great has been the inflow of freight

company to send Mr Peter Whaley
here from Charleston to assist in
i handling it.
Belated Letters to Santa Claus.
Last week's issue of The County
Record was complimentary to the
little children of Williamsburg and
to its advertisers. In order to make
it so we ran sixteen pages, or a paper
double the usual size. A good

incurred in the undertaking, and it
would be impossible for us to print
extra pages again this week to accommodate
the children who failed
to get their letters to Santa Claus
into the office in time for last week's
paper. We called for them and
urged that they be sent in before
our issue of December 13.
In order that the precious little
ones may not feel entirely slighted
by us, or that Santa Claus might
overlook them,we publish below the ,
names of those who have sent in letters
this week, and especially request
that old Santa Claus visit each
one of them next Monday night and
make their little hearts happv all
day Tuesday.
