There have been 16 deaths from
pneumonia among the troops in camp
at Hattiesburg, Miss, so far this
month.
Clinton Turner; a colored boy of
Smoaks, less than 3 years old, has
picked 396 pounds of cotton this

Robert J Wimrate of Sumter was
one of those rescued when the American
ship Acteon was recently torpedoed
by the Germans.
Three barrels of sugar were received
at Lexington Friday and sold
in three hours, no one being allowed
more than 50 cents worth.
A service of thanksgiving for the i
capture of Jerusalem was held in the
Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion,
Charleston, Sunday. i
The receipts of the colored fair at
Bishopville were $915,a highly cred- 1
itable showing when the very unfa- 1
vorable weather is considered.
A motor postal route is to be established
between Columbia and Augusta.
It will also supply Aiken,
Lexington and several other offices.
The Southern Textile exposition
at Greenville last week was the
greatest event of the kind ever held
in the South and attracted thousands
of visitors.

The schools at Greenville have
taken two weeks from the winter
session and will extend the spring
term the same length of time. This
is done to save coal.
The board of charities and corrections
has rejected about 150 applicants
for scholarships to Winthrop
on the ground that they were able
to pay for their tuition.

John H Dukes, one of Orangeburg's
oldest citizens, died there
Thursday, aged 84. He was a Confederate
veteran, had served in the
Legislature and was Sheriff of Orangeburg
county for 1(1 years.
A policeman of Orangeburg accidentally
killed a young colored girl
Monday while shooting at a fugitive
charged with larceny. The bullet
struck a tree and glanced, strikiug
the victim and killing her instantly.
The Clyde Steamship company has
asked the Interstate Commerce Commission
for authority to cancel its
second class and steerage rates and
party fares between the South and
New York. The result will be an in
?
crease in passenger iares.
A step to relieve the widespread
coal shortage in South Carolina was
taken up by the Fuel Administration
Tuesday,when instructions were sent
to Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee
producers to make immediate shipments
to Carolina towns.
Union services were to be held in
Gaffnev Methodist church Sunday by
the Methodists. Baptists and Presbyterians
to welcome the new pastor.
Rev W A Fairy, but have been postponed
on account of the serious illness
of one of Mr Fairy's daughters.
The Columbia convocation of the
Episcopal chlirch convened last week
in St Bartholomew's church, Hartsville,
Rev 0 T Porcher rector. It
was the first time that body had met
there in seven years, and the members
were greatly impressed with
the rapid growth of the town during
that time.
The postoffice department has
called for bids for an auto mail service
between Charleston and Columbia.
If established, the service will
be from February 1, 1918, to June
30, 1919, six times a week, via Summerville,
Harleyville, Bowman, Orangeburg.Jamison,
St Matthews and
New Brookland.
A cold wave of great intensity
swept over the United States la3t
week. In New York sleet crippled
the surface and elevated lines and
the subways were overcrowded with
nasspntrers. In Pennsylvania snow
fell to the depth of four to seven
feet. The Missouri river was frozen
over at St Joseph.Mo. Killing frosts
were reported as far South as Palm
Beach,Fla, and a number of cities in
Texas were deprived of natural gas
by the freezing of the pipes.
