We should not make the mistake
of assuming that the German people
have no responsibility for the
| atrocities perpetrated by their ari
mies. It is impossible to imagine a
j wicked government forcing the soldiers
to barbarities against their
will. There is too much evidence
of the relish of German soldiers in
: the execution of orders given them,
1 and the enjoyment of the license allowed
them by their officers. For
: example, Johann Wenger, a Bavarian
soldier, had in his possession
when killed a letter to his bethrothed
in which he had written:
"I am sending you a bracelet
made out of a piece of a shell. This
will be a fine souvenir of a German
warrior who has gone through the
whole campaign and has killed heaps
of Frenchmen. I have also bayoneted
a good number of women. During
the battle of Budonwiller I did
away with four women and seven
young girls in five minutes. The
captain had told me to shoot, these
French sows, but I preferred to run
j my bayonet through them."
He is an offset to the letter of the
j soldier who protested to Ambassa
dor against the butcheries m wnicn
he was forced to participate. There
is plenty more evidence of a similar
character to show that it is impossible
to acquit the German soldiers
on the charge of inhuman practices
and fasten all the guilt upon an abstraction
like the government or on

ville Methodist church has recently
come to successful close. The topic
of study and discussion was An
African Trail which proved to be
most beneficial and interesting to
the class of ten ladies. The class
will take up a new book immediately
after the holidays.
