MR. BOYLE OPPOSES NEW COUNTY
Thinks It Would Be Wrong to Make
Lake City a County Seat.
Editor County Record:
I notice through your columns
that there is a special election set
for December 11 next to vote on <
proposed new county known as Rut
ledge, with I.ake City as the count)
seat.
I am sorry to see this,as I think i:
would be a very had mistake if thi:
county be formed as published. He
fore giving rm reasons, will say tha
I have no special reason or complain
to make against any of the nev
county advocates; but 1 believe i
would be almost a critninal mistakto
form a new county, as describee
for the following reasons:
First, because when this county i
formed it will make it almost impos
sible to form another new count;
anywhere on the new Seaboard Ai
Line railroad, which section shouli
have the preference.
I am not advocating a new count;
at all, but it would be too bad an<
too selfish for the new county to b
formed as above stated. We shouh
not work for selfish ends; when yoi
can figure out what hardships i
would work on most of the peopl
having to cross the new as well a
the old counties without any railroai
at all to take them to the count;
seat.
A new county should be laid nut s
as not to work hardships on the pub
lie, and the thinly settled parts o
each county should be particularl;
looked after, so that as they develo]
they will not be handicapped by sel
fish motives or selfish interests.
To place a county seat at Lak
City, so near to Kingstree, our pres
ent county seat, would be wrong am
very unjust to all those who now o
will hereafter live, say along tb
Seaboard railroad,with no service a
all. Now. would this be treating th
future generations right? This i
the only way a new county shouli
be formed, for the best interest fo
the future. We should not be sel
fish enough to do wrong in a cas<
like this.
I have had no quarrel with oui
Lake City friends, for I like them
and while I am not a native of Wil
liamsburg. I have made my home ir
this county, of which Lake City wa:
until recently a part, for thirty-ont
years, so now I feel like I am ai
home, and 1 could not sit still and lei
this election pass without expressing
my views along this line, and 1 hope
that every man will be careful ano
consider well before he casts hi?
ballot, and say to himself, "Is this
the best for all concerned, now and
for future generations?"
I an) ^afraid that Lake City has
gotten to think too much or Lake
City, and it will be hard for her to
see any other place.
1 am not for anybody, set of men
or special place, but I do think that
Lake City would not be the proper
place for a new county seat, and I
hope each person that reads this will
think well before casting his callot
on December 11 next.
Mr Editor. 1 would thank you to
publish this and ask all adjoining
county papers to copy.
Yours respectfully.
