school has just finished its first

has reached one hundred and sixty.
The attendance has been fairly good.
On the whole, the pupils have done
average work for the first month,

The Literary societies have been
reorganized and are now ready to
do a good year's work.
At the first meeting of the ^iociety
of the high school the following
officers were elected: President.
Winston Eaddy; vice president, Lorena
Huggins; secretary and treasurer,
Wilma Harmon; corresponding
secretary, Ellen Hemingway;
Censor, Louis Venters; critic. Miss
Elise Rollins. This society meets
every Friday afternoon. At the last
meeting a very interesting programme,
consisting of a debate and
current events, was carried out.
The query for debate was: Resolved:
That, Women Should Receive
the Same Pay as Men for Doing
Equal Work. The girls of the society
debated against the boys, the
girls winning.

The Francis Marion Literary society
held its first meeting of thia
school session in the school asditnrinm
r>n thp fifth dav of October.
The officers who had been elected to
take up the work for this year, are:
President, Mabel Chandler; vice
president. Lucille Turbeville; secretary,
Louise Snow; treasurer, Leland
Thomas; first censor, Mary Rhem;
second censor, David Johnson; literary
editor. Eddie Munnerlyn. The
first meeting was quite a successful

performed duty. The members of
the society seem to be taking an unusual
interesting the meetings. A
great deal of patriotism has been
displayed in the selections for reading
and recitation.
The boys of the high school spend
fifteen minutes every morning in
military training under the direction
of Professor Mitchell. At the same
time Miss Jackson gives cooking and
sewing lessons to the high school
girls.
The high school girls are planning
to organize into Camp Fire Girls.
^ They hope that their organization
will be completed in a month s time, j
The teachers and pupils are getting
ready for the Georgetown county
fair which will be held at the
county seat on November 7, 8. 9.
This year our school will have the
privilege of attending two fairs? j
the i;ne above mentioned and Wil-1
Hamburg county fair, which will be'
held in Kingstree November 13 to |
16. inclusive.
The teachvrs and patrons of the !
community were called to meet in
the school auditorium at 4 o'clock
October *J9. Matters of vital importance
were discussed, among
them being the question of organizing
a Parent-Teacher association.
The school work is running very
smoothly and the year promises to
be a very successful one.
