Manilla,la, October 27:?Patriotic
indignation over the refusal of the
owner of the only assembly hall in
Aspinwall, a village near here, to
permit the use of his place by Liberty
loan campaigners 9tirred more
than 75 citizens of Columbia to such
resentment that they descended upon
the little town today, closed all its
stores, obtained the arrest of the recalcitrant
hall owner and obtained
subscriptions for almost the entire
quota of the township's bond allotment.
The name of any citizen of
the town, which is a German settlement.
who did not buy a bond was
given to the federal authorities for
investigation, and the State council
of defense ordered the resignation
of the town marshal.
It had been told in Manilla that
residents of Aspinwall were laughing
scornfully when approached by
Liberty bond salesmen, and though
Manilla itself is populated largely by
expatriated Germans, the mayor organized
a flying squadron of bankers

S. C. Congressmen to Visit Hawaii.

following official statement concernog
the trip which Congressmen J W
Ragsdale and Sam J Nicholls of
South Carolina are to make to Hawaii
was given out here today:

i series of patriotic meetings in the
West before sailing for the island.,
These meetings, it is announced, will
be under the official auspices of the
jeveral States and cities in which
they are held. En route from St
Louis to San Francisco the Hawaiian
Congressional party will not only
urge subscriptions to the Liberty
oan but speeches will be delivered
explaining America's war purposes
md the causes that led to the entrance
of the United States into the
European conflict. Patriotic rallies
will be staged at St Louis, Kansas
City, Denver, Salt 'Dake City, San
Francisco and other cities.
"The Congressional party will
visit Hawaii to study general conditions
there and gain knowledge of
its legislative needs. There will be
about 35 Congressmen in the party."
