and 6C years, inclusive, are liable, unless
exempted by law, to a poll tax of
SI.00. also to a commutation tax of $2.00.
Special levy on all cows, hogs, goats
and sheep in parts of Penn, Anderson
and all of Suttons townships for fence,
50 mills.
Upon all unpaid taxes after December
31 a penalty of 1% will be added
for January, 1% for February and 5%
to 15th day of March next, after which
the books will be closed and executions
issued upon all unpaid taxes.
Those who desire to pay their taxes
through the mail may expedite matters
by dropping the Treasurer a card asking
for the amount of their taxes, so as
to avoid sending the wrong amount,
also stating the tcwninip or townships
(if property is owned in more than one)
and if possible give school district
where property is located. After paying
taxes examine your receipts and see
if all your property is covered; if not,
see about it at once.
By following the above suggestions
complications and additional cost may

on the public road from Kingstree
to Manning, about 5 miles from Kingstree,
which tract has about 150 to 200

desire.

situated about 3 miles from Salters,

ISLAND OF SERPENTS.
A Tiny Spot That it Big In History
and In Legend.
"Less than thirty miles east of
i Snlina, the Iilack sea port, is the
| tir?y Island of Serpents, around
which cling many fantastic legends
I of fascinating interest as well as
J several historical episodes which at
one time threatened to become of
international moment," says a bulletin
issued by the National Geographic
society.
"It was to this island that Thetis,
the marine goddess, is supposed to
have carried the ashes of her son
Achilles, hence the temple erected
here in honor of the hero of the
Trojan war. Another legend relates
that Thetis snatched the body
of Achilles from the funeral pyTe,
that he was restored to life and
that thereafter he lived on the island
with Iphigcnia, the daughter
of Agamemnon who had been saved
from sacribce by the goddess Artemis.
"One of the moat poetic descriptions
of the island and its temple is
given by Arrian in the account of
his voyage around the Black 6ea in
the second century of the Christian
era. He wrote:
"It is related that Thetis gave
this island to Achilles and that he
still inhabits it His temple and
atatne, both of very ancient workmanship,
are seen there. No hmnan
being dwells on it It haa only a
few goats which mariners convey to

or sacred gifts are suspended in
honor of Achilles, such as vases,
rinira and nrecious ferns.
" 'Sea birds, divers and fowl innumerable
frequent the island and
these birds alone have the care of
the shrine. J2very morning they repair
to the sea, and, dipping their
wing in the waves, sprinkle the temple
and afterward sweep with their
plumage its sacred pavement'
'The name Island of Serpents
grew out of the fact that numerous
black snakes from four to five feet
long were discovered here by mariners.
Many of the reptiles are
said to have fallen in the cisterns
of the island and polluted the waters
which are now undrinkable. It
is interesting to recall in connection
with the name of the island
that Achilles was often referred to
as 'the snake born,' and that his
mother Thetis frequently assumed
the form of a snake.
"The Amazons are supposed 10
hare attempted to seize this island
on one occasion, but the ghost of
Achilles appeared and so terrified
the horses of the female warriors
that the riders were thown and severely
trampled upon, whereupon
the expedition was abandoned.
"This meager rock brougHt England
and Russia to the verge of war,
following the treaty of peace which
ended the Crimean conflict. The
island was not mentioned in the
terras of the treaty, and when Turkey
sent a small party to relight
the lighthouse which had been dark

Russia attempted to take control
of the beacon, which stands as a
guidepost to the Danube's mouths.
England protested and sent a fleet
across the Black sea to enforce her
demands in behalf of her then recent
ally, the sultan. Russia after
a brief threat of resistance yielded.
The island passed into Roumanian
hands wheD that nation threw off
the Ottoman shackles in 1877."
