Planting of Wheat,
The average yield of wheat in the
State for the past ten years has
been 10.4 bushels. This yield could
\)e brought up considerably if proper
fertilizers were used, seedjbed were
properly prepared, and good seed
were planted. The government is
asking that we increase the supply
of wheat this year so as to feed the
European countries and our soldiers.
The seed can be bought at reasonable
prices in the county. I have
the names of several farmers who
n supply wheat for seed.
FERTILIZERS.
Lime should be applied at the rate
of 1000 to 4000 pounds to the acre,
two weeks before planting. 250
pounds of acid phosphate, and 25 to
50 pounds of nitrate of soda should
be applied when planting. Under
the abnormal conditions potash cannot
be gotten unless from cotton
seed meal. When wheat starts to
grow in the spring, 50 to 77 pounds
of nitrate of soda should oe appnea.
Barnyard manure is the best fertilizer
when it can be had. Five to
six tons spread to the acre, 40 to 50
pounds of acid phosphate should be
used with every ton of barnyard
manure.
PREPARATION OF SEED BED AND
PLANTING.
/
The soil should be thoroughly
plowed or disked so that it is in a
good condition, two or three weeks
before seeding if lime is to be used.
If the drill is to be used the ground
should be harrowed and then rolled.
The soil is then left thus two weeks
for the organic matter to decay and
for the lime to neutralize the acid.
The soil should then be disked again
and the seed drilled in. If no drill
is available, the seed can be sown on
top of the grown and harrowed in.

The old miser in the story, who
dropped a five dollar gold piece in
' u j
the plate at church, mistaKing it ior
a nickel, could get no satisfaction
out of the deacon, as will be recalled,
but he was not the man to give
up easily.
Accordingly he sought legal advice
with a view of instituting a
suit at law.
But the lawyer whom he consulted
was one of those rare and gifted
souls who would rather be witty
than rich, or almost anything else,
for that matter.
"Sir," said he at once, "you have
no case. You are guilty of contributory
negJigence."
