Mr J Percy Hutson has accepted a position as salesman for the King Hardware Co Mr A W Mcintosh has entered upon his duties with the Florence Dry Goods Co. Mrs L L Hunter and children of Sumter spent yesterday with Prof and Mrs J W Swittenberg. * M Miss Sadie McDonald of Georgetown is visiting at the home of her aunt, Mrs Belle G Blakely. Mrs R J McCabe is visiting her brother, Mr Gregg, and her sister, Mrs C S Howell, at Marion. Miss Miriam Fluitt of Columbia is spending her vacation with friends and relatives in the community. The banks will be closed Monday (Labor day), and the postoffice will observe the usual holiday hours. Mr and Mrs J C Kelley and little Miss Katheryn visited the former's parents at Timmonsville last week. Hon P H Stoll and family and Mr and Mrs W M Stoll spent Sunday in Georgetown with relatives and friends. Mr and Mrs Leroy Cates and little Miss Virorinia Gates have returned from a visit to relatives in North Carolina. Six tracts of land will be offered at public sale here Monday, five for non-payment of taxes and one under execution. There will be no preaching services at the Baptist church during September,but Sunday-school will be held as usual. Mrs Edgar Worthington of Florsnce is the guest of her sister, Mrs B F Patrick. Mr Worthington spent the week-end here. Mr E B Rhodus of Greelyville was in Kingstree Saturday, where he entrained for the Western Jmarkets to l purchase his stock. Messrs J D Williams and CH Ham of Timmonsville were in Kingstree today, the former looking for a 400 or WO acre tract of land for farming purposes. , Mr J F Wolff's bakery was put out of commission a few days this week by the collapse of the oven. It has been repaired and baking was resumed today. . Mr Hipp returned the same day. Mr W F Hogan and son Clyde of i Greelyville were pleasant callers at our office Tuesday. Mr Hogan said cotton prospects in his section are very favorable. The derailment of a box car on a northbound freight train just below the trestle here early yesterday morning interrupted traffic for several hours. The damage was slight, and no one was hurt. Miss Lyllian Alsbrook left last week for Waynesville and other mountain resorts in western North Carolina, where she will spend the remainder of the summer, Mr and Mrs P S Courtney returned from their outing in North Carolina yesterday afternoon. Mr C C Brinkley was taken critically ill Sunday night and was removed to the McLeod infirmary at Florence Monday,Dr Walter Harper accompanying him. At last reports 1 he was much improved. Under jthe emergency appropriation as a war measure for the production and conservation of food, Miss Emma '.Cooper of .Indiantown has been appointed assistant home i demonstration agent for Williamsburg county. Rev Dr S C Byrd, president m Chicora College for Women, will officiate at the Presbyterian church Sunday morning in the absence of the pastor. Rev P S McChesney, and will preach at the union service in the Methodist church at night. Mr and Mrs E J Hester and their daughter, Miss Sarah, left Kingstree Tuesday for their home at Newbern, N C. Mr Hester has been connected with the Nelson warehouse here for several seasons and is popular with the furmprx of this section, who will be pleased to learn that he expects to be in the warehouse business here againgnext season. While Constable Turner of Lanes was trying to arrest a young colored man yesterday afternoon, the latter broke away and ran. Mr Turner called to him to halt, but the negro did not heed. The constable |then fired, the ball entering the negro's body supposedly through the back and intestines. Mr H U Kinder on Monday arrested j Walter Sheely, colored, who was | wanted in Sumter for the larceny of a watch. The accused was taken I x * t \ back to that city Tuesday by Policeman Ward of Sumter. The arrest was made at Mr J E Baker's farm, and that gentleman will prosecute Sheely for driving over his cotton. Mr Epps had previously recovered! the watch, as noted in our last issue The Boy Scouts went on a camping trip to Murrell's Inlet Tuesday and will be gone for several days.; The following scouts comprised the ; party: Harold Smith, Nappy and La-j vine Nelson, Hampden Montgomery,; Jack Meadors, George Miller, Harold Steele, Wm Gordon,Douglass Kinder and Walter Scott. Revs D A Phillips and G T Harmon and Mr James Benton took the boys thrqugh the country in their automobiles. Other members of the party are Mr Joseph R Walker and Franklin Phillips. The following orphanages: Thorn well, Clinton; tipworin, u>iumoi?; and Connie Maxwell. Greenwood, will ask all friends in their various constituencies to observe Saturday, October 13, as a work day for orphan children. The plan is simple and has been tried for several years with great success. The idea is that on this special day every friend of each institution will devote the income of the day or the proceeds of labor done that dfty as a contribution to the orphan boys and girls. We are sure the scheme will appeal to many of our people. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETS. Roles for Municipal Primary Adopted and Assessments of Candidates Fixed A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Kingstree Democratic club was held Monday night with R K Wallace, W R Scott, T C Jacobs, L D Rodgers and G A McElveen, members, present. The object of the meeting was to complete arrangements for the approaching municipal election, fix assessments and attend to such other matters as might be brought before it. It was decided that each candidate for Alderman and Commissioner of Public Works be assessed the sum of $1.00 and that each candidate for Mayor $5.00. The date for the campaign meeting of candidates was fixed for Monday, night Sept. 3, and candidates for Alderman will be allowed, by the rules adopted by the Executive Committee, five minutes time in which to make his speech and the Mayoralty candidates will be allowed thirty minutes for the same purpose. Mr Dan E Epps of Workman died suddenly Tuesday afternoon at his home, at the age oft 74, and was buried yesterday afternoon at Midway. ? -a a nr _ ? I Mr ?pps naa oeen sunenng mieiy of heart trouble, but up to a very few minutes of his death he was able to walk about the room. He was an old Confederate veteran, having fought in the war between the States. Baggett's Novel Sale. The auction sale which opened last Wendesday and is being conducted for T. E. A sale of this kind is somewhat of a novelty in Kingstree, and provides an opportunity for the fair sex to get silverware, cut glass, bric-a-brac, and jewelry for personal adornment at their own price.
