PRIVATE CARRAWAY OF RHEMS
Among the ''First to Fight" in France
with the United States Marines.
Among the specially selected men
who are to be first to fight for the
Stars and Stripes on the firing line
in France is Thpmas J Carraway, a
private of the 47th company. He
has gone with the regiment of U S
marines which forms a part of the
first American overseas contingent.
Private Can-away, who is the son of
Mr T M Carraway of Rhems, enlisted
in the United States marine corps
at its Atlanta recruiting station July
10, 1915.
The "soldiers of the sea" are the
oldest branch of our military service, and
they have a splendid record.
Their activities date back to 1775,
and since that time ithey have been
first to fight for America in many
countries. Th^ local boy has already
proven his mettle and will doubtless
continue to uphold the motto of the
marines?"Always faithful."

Kingstree's attractive residences. It
was recently completed by the contractor,
Mr Chas H Singleton, and
is one of the very best constructed

in every particular, and while its architectural
design is the embodiment
of simplicity, it embraces every family
convenience that could be wished
for. It is a creditable addition to the
town, and should be a source of great
pride to its owner and occupants.

Since the quart a month law went
nto effect the price of booze at Gaffney
has risen until it is almost bepond
the power of ordinary people
to purchase. One old toper said that
the price now is $1.50 per pint, and
that his information was to the effect
that it wobld be advanced to $2.
rhe sad part of it is that a pint of
whiskey would only be a starter for
trim, and it would take a small fartune
to make him drunk, if the quotations
are correct.

As an illustration of the speed with i
which work on the cantonments is I
rushed, the administration buildings'
at Louisville, Ky, were constructed !
from lumber cutin a Mississippi pine j
forest the week before. The trees
were felled on Saturday, kiln dried
on Sunday, loaded on freight cars
Monday and delivered at the canton

one week from the day the trees had
