Washington, July 24:?Those selected for service under the draft will be permitted to enlist in the regular army or National Guard any time prior to their call for examination before exemption board, probably eight days hence. Provost Marshal General Crowder announced Sunday. They will not be allowed, however, to join the marine corps. The first men actually drafted will probably be detailed to the regular army in order to bring that branch up to its full war strength of 300,000, if the 35,000 enlistments needed are not obtained before examinations begin. The next will be put into the National Guard. Exemption machinery for virtually the entire country is complete. The provost marshal general's office L announced tonight that the names of members of the appellate boards in the last of the States probably would be announced this week. "These Indians with us," said a captain with the Canadian force whose parents live in Philadelphia, "have performed services that never could have been performed bj a i ? I white man. "Again and again during the past two years I have seen them go out at night between the trenches, without firing a shot, without making the slightest noise or creating the very slightest disturbance, and come back leading a half dozen Germans, from whom much valuable information has been obtained." Development of the Telephone. The world first learned of the telephone at the Centennial exposition at Philadelphia in 1876. On January 20 of that year a young college professor of Salem. Mass., Alexander Graham Bell, had executed specifications and a claim for an invention embodying an improvement in telegraphy. which in reality was a telephone, and on February 14 his , application for the American patent was filed at Washington. The first telephone message of which there is record was this: "Mr Watson, come here, I want you." It was sent on March 10, 1876, by the inventor from the top floor of a Boston boarding house to a colleague, Thomas A Watson, in a room below. Watson heard every word and rushed to appraise Bell of the fact. Almost 40 years later, on January 15, 1915, Doctor Bell sent this same message to Mr Watson, only this time Bell was in New York and | Watson in San Francisco.
