London, July 18:?>Major General Pershing, commander of the American expeditionary force in France, seated for tea on the beautiful Thames Terrace of the House of Commons with Colonel Astor as his host had an experience in England's war rationing when he found that he could not have sugar in his tea and on his strawberries as well. f'You may have only one portion of sugar, two-sevenths of an ounce," the waitress informed him with a quaint air of precisenessand the General promptly chose sugarless strawberries, remarking that the sun, as though to compensate, had sweetened the strawberries so well that the sugar was not essential. In the bounteous times of peace, the House of Common? waitress used to trip around the Terrace during the tine June afternoons with big bowls of white powdered sugar and lavish jugs of cream. Now the sugar is strictly rationed, and the amount of cream that may be used is limited to one small measured portion for each person. A Case of Real Patriotism. Muskogee, Okla, July 18?Belies ing that the use of a cork leg should not prevent him from serving his country, John Franklin walked over fifty miles from a farm near Wilburton, to this city to apply for enlistment in the United States Marine Corps. Franklin had spent two months ploughing the fields previous to his long walk, and supported himself on the hike by working at odd jobs along the way. He surprised the Marine Corps medical examiner by walking without the slightest sign of lameness. Although Franklin expressed the opinion that his cork leg should be considered a handy life preserver is case of submarine attack, he was not accepted. '"jST KINGSTREE Lodge, No. 46 A.
