Mr Wm Gordon Rodgers of

The election Tuesday in Cedar
Swamp school district on the question
of levying an additional 4-mill
school tax resulted in favor of the
proposition by a vote of 17 to 6.
The success of this public-spirited
movement had been so generally expected
that many of its strongest
friends did not spare the time to go
to the polls, being very busy with
their tobacco, otherwise the affirmaative
vote would have been much
larger. Cedar Swamp school is doing
an excellent work, and with its fi

Delegates to the twelfth biennial
convention of the sovereign camp,
Woodmen of the World,in session at
Atlanta Friday, approved an emergency
war fund measure providing
for the taxation of 10 eents monthly
on 800,000 members of the order for
the period of the war. The sum will
be used to pay the insurance claims
of Woodmen killed or physically disabled
while in war service. It is estimated
that more than 25,000 members
are already serving the colors.
On account of the increased cost
of stock feeds, on and after July 20
I shall be compelled to advance the
pnce of sweet milk to 12$ cents the
quart, and sweet cream to 50 cents
the quart

Democratic Club Meeting Tonight.
There will be a meeting of the
Kingstree Democratic club at the
court house tonight at 8:30 o'clock
to arrange for the municipal primary
to be held August 28, when nominations
will be made for Mayor, six
Aldermen and a member of the
Public Works Commission.

The Elder Beattie Dead.
Richmond, July 18:?Henry Clay
Beattie, father of Henry C Beattie,
who paid the death penalty for murdering
his young wife, died today in
a local hospital. Mr Beattie was a
wealthy merchant and bank officer.
The First National bank of Walterboro
has declared a semi-annual
dividend of 8%, the first time any
bank in Colleton county has paid a
semi-annual dividend, it having been
the custom to declare only yearly
ones.
Several of the Florence Boy Scouts
had a narrow escape from drowning
at Pawley's Island Friday of last
week by going beyond their depth.

MRS. A. til. SNIDER DEAD. i
Tbls Estimable Lady Passes
Away at Myrtle Beacb.
A telegram announcing the death
of Mrs Snider, wife of Dr A M Snider,
was received here early yesterday
morning. Mrs Snider had passed
away suddenly Tuesday night at
Myrtle Beach.
The remains were brought to
Kingstree on 89 last night and
funeral services took place at 10
o'clock this morning at her late
residence on Railroad avenue, conducted
by her pastor, Rev A E
Riemer.
The deceased was a most excellent
lady. Before marriage she was Miss
Dosha Cooper and was reared in the
Suttons neighborhood. She Was first
married to Mr J J Greham, who
died some years ago. About two
ago she married Dr Snider and has
since then resided with her husband
in Kingstree. Mrs Snider had been
in poor health for some time, but
the announcement of her death
came as a suprise to the people of
this community. Much sympathy
is felt here for her bereaved husband.
Dr and Mrs Snider were, as is their
custom, spending the summer at
Myrtle Beach in Horry county.
Moving Inco New Home.
Mr and Mrs A M Reid have returned
home after a delightful visit
to relatives and friends in North
Carolina. They are now enjoying the
new exDerience of moving into their
handsome new cottage home op Kelley
street, adjoining the home of
Mrs Reid.s father, Mr WM Vause.
This new home is a handsome addition
to North Kingstree and our people
generally are glad that Mr and
Mrs Reid have adopted this good old
town as a place of permanent abode.
Mr Reid is a "tar heel," because he
Couldn't help being one, but even at
that he is a fine "old" fellow, and a
most desirable citizen?one that any
community would doubtless appreciate.

little family much happiness in their :

Tobacco Men Entertained.
The Kingstree Booster Club entertained
the tobacco men here at a
pine bark stew last Friday night.
The object of the affair was to bring
mpmhprs of the club and the to
bacco men together that they might
get acquainted and the latter made
to feel that the citizens of Kingstree
are glad to have them here. Some of
the finest specimens of red breast
and bream that ever came out of
Black River were provided for the
feast, which was prepared by Mr D
J Epps in his usual excellent style.
The supper was held at the Kellahan
Warehouse, and the evening was
much enjoyed.
Williamsburg Must Furnish 240 Men.
Williamsburg county must furnish
297 men in the army draft; 57
of this number are volunteers and
are already enlisted in the National
Guard. There remaims 240 to be selected
by the exemption board when

Juvenile Joys.
Mri W T Wilkins gave a juvenile
lawn party at her home Monday afternoon
from 4 to 6 o'clock in honor
of her little grandchildren, Misses
Jane, Adelaide, and Master Samuel
B Wilkins. Jr. of Athens, Ga.
Sixty little tots were present to
participate in the joyous occasion.
It was a beautiful picture indeed,
when they were all gathered in a
sort of circle on the lawn, dressed in
their best party clothes and bedecked
with dainty rosettes and bows of
ribbon.
They were served with cream and
cake. Mrs Wilkins was assisted in
entertaining the little guests by Mrs
Samuel Wilkins, Miss Selma Thorn
and Mrs Kenneth James of Darlington.
Tuesday afternoon, at the home of
Mrs M L Allen,a birthday party was
given in honor of the second anniversary
of little Miss Margarite Allen,and
a number of her little friends
were present to enjoy the evening
and extend congratulations and sincere
wishes for many happy returns
to their charming little hostess.
Tobaacco Barn Burned.
About 4 o'clock Friday morning
Rev T E James' tobacco barn near
Morri8ville was burned, the fire being
caused by the furnace breaking
through. About 400 pounds of tobacco,second
cropping,were destroyed,
several colored men sharing in
the loss. By good work the flames
were prevented from spreading.
Messrs F Rhem & Sons, Wm Marshall

Mr James the use of their
barns. Mr Cribb's being accepted, as
it is the nearest.

TO HONOR THE SOLDIERS.
Big Basket Picnic to be Given
Here Next Tuesday.
Plans for a big basket picnic and
the carrying out of a most enjoyable
programme here Tuesday, July 24,
have been practically completed by
the Woman's Service League and the
Kingstree Booster Club, under whose
auspices the event is to take place,
in honor of the Williamsburg members
of the National Guard. Every
indication at present, points to a
glorious day for the fifty-seven
members if they will only present
themselves on that date and give the
the citizens of the town a chance to
show their appreciation of the patriotism
these boys have shown in
the call to service.
At a meeting of the Booster Club
Monday night for the purpose of
discussing this entertainment, Messrs
H A Miller. W H Welch and T
Emile Arrowsmith were appointed as
a committee to arrange a programme
of entertainment and these
gentlemen have gone into the mat
ter witn a determination to mane
the day a memorable one for these
patriotic sons of the town and
county.
Hon P K Stoll went to Charleston
yesterday to engage speakers, employ
Metz's band and carry out other
details in connection with Tuesdays
entertainment. The News and
Courier of this morning says:
"Mr P H Stoll, of Kingstree, Solicitor
of the Third Judicial District,
was in the city yesterday. The primary
object of his visit was to secure
speakers for a patriotic demonstration
to be held in his town Tuesday
in honor of the fifty-seven young
men of Williamsburg county who
are members of National Guard
companies, and who will, therefore,
