Williamsburg Boy Off to France. The following letter was handed to us several days ago by Mrs R J < Burgess, to whom it was written by her brother, who is well known in Kingstree, and used to work here. We publish the letter because it so plainly portrays the patriotism of the young man who wrote it. The letter follows: Jersey City, N J, June 8,1917. Dear Sister:? Will drop you a few lines to let: * xr 1.11 I you Know wnere i am. iour ietier was received a few days before I left Douglas, Ariz, but did not have time to answer. We left Douglas on May 27, and came to New Jersey. We were coming about eight days by through Pullman, and I sent mother a card. I didn't tell her where 1 am going, but I'm going to France. One half of our supply company had orders to sail today; that still leaves about seventy-five of us old supply company men here, yet. We are liable to leave any time. Now please don't worry about me, for I feel sure that we will land safely, as the supply company will be well guarded, and when I get over there I will send you i a card. I'm sure glad there was one boy in our family to help the USA, and I'm perfectly willing to go and do my part. If I should get killed, I feel like I will have died doing my duty. I guess the boys in old S C are getting nervous, but I hope they will keep their heads level and stand for the red, white and blue. Somehow I feel sure that I will come back to old home, sweet home, but even if I don't, I could never die doing anything better than trying to protect my country; and if all the boys in old S C felt as I do, they would offer their services at once. As I'm in a big hurry, will close, as ever, your brother, D D McConnell. P S. Don't answer until jou hear from me. Mr McConnell is now on his way to France, having sailed with his company since the above letter was written.?[Ed.] Senator Tillman, who has been under treatment in Atlanta, Ga, for some time, resumed his duties at Washington on Monday last. He seemed in excellent health and spirits and was warmly welcomed by a host of friends. The Boo8t?r spirit received new inspiration . here last Friday night, when Col N F Thompson of Birmingham, Ala, one of the speakers being sent through, the South by The Progressive Farmer to address the people on the importance of food preparedness, spoke in the court house here. Col Thompson's remarks contained excellent advice and conveyed many new thoughts to the minds of those fortunate enough to hear him. Messrs E |C Epps and W H Welch and Dr W L Taylor spoke briefly and their remarks were convincing evidence of the interest felt by the audience ancl an indication of newlyaroused enthusiasm in the interest of community co-operation. The recently organized Booster club will me?t again tomorrow (Friday) night, when it is probable that work will be taken up along many of the lines siuggested by Col Thompson's remarks. Second Meeting of Home Guards. The second meeting of the Kingstree Home G uards was held Tuesday night, with Mr P G Gourdin presiding and Mr Walter Sullivan acting as secretary. There were between fifty and seventy-five persons present, several of these having joined the organization si ace its first meeting, on Tuesday of last week. It was decided to hold meetings three times each week, Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, at the court house, and drill for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p. m. The drilling, etc, will be under the supervision of men who have had military training. Nothing: definite was learned as 10 the procuring of rifles. A committee was appointed at last week's meeting to get information along this line, and reported that there is now a bill pending in the House, which provides for ^e distribution of 600,000 old-style rifles to home guard organizations throughout the United States. 1785 1S17 COLLEGE of CHARLESTON Sooth C*-?lias's OkUst CoOof 133d Year Begin* September 29.
