Florence is to have a $50,000 mill to saw and dress lumber and manufacture shingles. The first death from the heat this summer occurred at Tulsa,Okla, Saturday, the mercury standing at 110 degrees. The North Carolina Baptist Chautauqua convened at Wrightsville Beach yesterday and will continue through tomorrow. The first bale of this year's cotton to be sold was auctioned at Lyford, Texas, Monday last for $925. This^ is the fifth year Lyford has had the' the distinction of selling the first bale. A GOOD CITIZEN GONE. Mr H H Kinder Died Suddenly Tuesday Morning. Mr Harvey H Kinder, one of the most highly respected citizens of Williamsburg county, and a venerable landmark of this community, died suddenly at the home, of his son, H U Kinder, about 8:30 o'clock Tuesday morning. The deceased was born and reared in this county and spent his life within a few miles of Kingstree. tie was Yt> years 01 age. He was among the first of South Carolina's sons to take up arms in the War Between the States,throughout which he served with an unflinching bravery that won him distinction among his comrades,although he was captured during one of the campaigns and imprisoned. In this distress he won the affection and sympathy of a Union officer, who later aided him in making his escape. He was a manly man, honest and upright in all his dealings with his fellowmen. For a number of years Mr Kinder was the commander of Camp Pressley, U C V, and was one of the pension commissioners of this county. Mr Kinder is survived by five sons and two daughters: H F Kinder, L P Kinder, H U Kinder, J C Kinder, and Virgil Kinder; Mrs W H Carr and Mrs Lemuel Koger of Walterboro;also a number of grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church, of which he was a member,at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon and interment was made in the Williamsburg cemetery, Rev P S McChesney officiating.
