ACCUSED HUSBAND IN JAIL.
Henry M Atkinson Charged With Rilling
His Wife.
Bishopville June 25:?Henry M
Atkinson, a young white man about
thirty-two years old, from the Ionia
section of this county, was lodged in
jail here yesterday afternoon on a
warrant charging him with having
murdered his wife,Mrs Nancy Atkinson,
on Friday night at 11 o'clock.
Mrs Atkinson was shot while lying
in her bed asleep, her head having
? - ? r a a.
been blown almost ott. nenry m ai- i
kinson, the husband, it is said, claims
to have been in the same room in another
bed asleep and that the gun
fire woke him and that he struck a
match and found his wife with her
head blown almost off, and that she
had committed suicide.
The coroner's jury, after viewing
the body and seeing the position that
Bhe was lying in.and considering other
circumstances, brought in a verdict
that she came to her death bv
gun-shot wounds at the hands of an
unknown party. Yesterday afternoon
R A Atkinson, a brother of the deceased,
swore out a warrant before
hfrC<nstrate L R Dixon, of this place,
charging Henry M Atkinson, her
husband, with having committed the
crime. Sheriff S J Scarborough went
out to his home and immediately arrested
Henry M Atkinson, brought
him here and lodged him in jail. He
has employed the Hon Thofaas H Taturn
to defend him.
Electrical Storm Strikes MtJlins.
Mullins, June 26?Mullins was visited
last Friday evening by a severe
electrical and hail storm, followed
by the heaviest rains this section has
had in a long time. Damage to crops
was considerable in sections north of
here.
The new Episcopal church on
south Main street, only recently
completed, was struck by lightning
and the rear end knocked out, setting
the building on fire. The fire
department responded through a
Hnwnnour of rain and quick
and diligent work prevented serious
damages. The damages were fortunately
very light, probably not exceeding
$200,
A short distance away, lightning
struck the residence of Wade H Harrelson.
Mrs Harrelson, her son, aged
even, and her sister, were rendered
unconscious, and it is expected Mrs
Harrelson's condition may prove fatal
as a result of the nervous shock
and frightful burns. Her clothes
were partly torn from her body and
the shoes from her feet and it is feared
that the burns are of a serious
nature. The son suffered less serious
injuries. Mr Harrelson, one of the
leaders of the fire department, responded
to the alarm of fire and worked
there for some time without the
knowledge of misfortune to his family,
and did not learn of it until his
return home after the fire department
had returned to its quarters.
The residences of W S Renfrew
and T T Martin were also struck by
lightning, but neither was seriously
damaged.
waycross, ua, was swept uy a w
:lone Monday, destroying much propirty.
The ACL train 3hed was
wrecked and two employes mortally
njured. Considerable hail fell, dong
much damage to crops.
A number of Nobles of the Mystic
