Noted Orator-Little Damage from Hail

Cedar Swamp,June 13:?This section
so far has not been visited byhail
storms from which any damage
to speak of has resulted. Yet on one
r two occasions the hail pebbles
pelted the tender tobacco and cotton
leaves sufficiently hard to pierce
small holes. Hailstones appear to be

the stone is retained in a gyratory
or whirling upward current, so they
may occur at any time or any place
during a thunder storm.
Notwithstanding the heavy clouds,
loud thunder and sharp lightning

of Atlanta, Ga, a speaker of
national fame, arrived at Cedar
Grove church, accompanied by Rev
A E Riemer and Mr J M Brown of
Kingstree, a goodly crowd was there
waiting to hear the man, compared
as an orator with William Jennings
Bryan and other noted speakers, expatiate
on the previously announced
theme, "A Stainless Flag for America."
Mr Upshaw no doubt is a man
of indomitable energy. Suffering a

while on the farm,he was in bed for
seven yearfc, went to college at thirty-one,
married and is the father of
two red-headed girls. He is now engaged
in a noble effort, "Dry America"
rallies under the auspices of the
National Anti-Saloon league,and has
acquired national fame, notwithstanding
the embarrassing inconvenience
of having to walk with the
aid of crutches.

and Mag Gaskins of Lake City and
Dot McGill of Kingstnee have been
isitore here this week.

AMERICAN HORSES DIE IN FRANCE.

Washington, June 12^There is
great anxiety among horse shippers
over the heavy mortality in France
of horses sent from this country recently.
The cause of the deaths is a
mystery,and experts have suggested
everything from a German plot to
some undiscovered malady.
The horses were shipped under the
most approved conditions, received
every care at sea and landed in
France in as good condition as could
be expected. ?et they soon become
afflicted with a malady that proves
from 60 to 70 per cent fatal.
Death comes so rapidly that treatment
is impossible. Horse dealers in
the southern regions of France, where
the mortality has been greatest,sag
geit poisoning before the animals
leave the United States. In fifteen
months thousands of the horses have
died. Some veterinarians suggest an
infection of grippe.
Dr A D Melvin.of the Department
of Agriculture,thinks the horses have
died from "forage poisoning," the
popular name for spinal meningetis
caused by mouldy feed, and that it
was contracted after they landed.
It is probable that the Government
will soon have all shipments of horses
made under Federal supervision as
a precaution.
An English lad who ran away to
sea at the age of 16 and was not
heard of again in 13 years, recently

Both had been wounded on the same
day while fighting with the British
forces in France.

STATE LICENSES COME IN SLOWLY.
Pentlty Attached After July 1 Upon
Owners of Automobiles.
The number of applications for
State automobile licenses received
daily at the State highway department
has decreased materially and
without apparent reason within the
past week or ten days. Prior to that
time the entire office force was workins:
until late at night in an effort to
keep up with the daily receipts, but
at the Dresent time only about 350
to 500 applications are received daily.
The State highway engineer wishes
to call the attention of all automobile
and motorcycle owners throughout
the State who have not yet made
application for licenses to the fact
that the time to secure these licenses
is very limited,and he wishes to urge
all of them to get their applications
in at the earliest possible date to
avoid delays and disappointments as
well as embarrassing situations with
the county officials after July 1.
Up to the present time only about
17,500 owners' licenses have been
issued out of an estimated total in
the State of 35,000, and less than
three weeks remain before the $25
penalty becomes effective.
It is to be noted that about onehalf
the cars owned in Williamsburg
county are yet without the State li
