Novel Sensation in Florence. I
Florence was treated to a rich and
rare sensation yesterday morning, a
young woman dressed in man's clo- *
thing fleeing from a pursuing crowd <
of men and children, jumping fences
with the agility of an acrobat and
finally run down and sent to where 1
her offenses apparently began. None
know the woman or,if they do, they
will not tell. She is|about 20 years
of age and is supposed to be a Mrs s
Whitney or Whinney, said to be the i
wife of an engineer in Wilmington,>
N C. She had been passing worth-! (
less checks. Her plan was to take a k
check to a furniture store, buy half j
or two-thirds of its face and get the j
rest in cash. She got off the train 1i
Tuesday morning.took a car to Flor- t
ence, went in at the front door of a' S
boarding house and out at the back,
got another car and went to Lake r
Citv, giving the driver the slip there I
also, it is said,and was finally arrest- j
ed by the chief of police of that town
on an order from the Sheriff at Florence.
\
She was taken to that city and delivered
to the jailor, but as she was c
so ladylike in appearance, Mr and 1
Mrs Bryant gave up one of their c
rooms in the jail to her. Mr Bryant, j
anxious about her, sat all night on 5
the piazza, watching the exit to the '
room. At dawn she got him to call
Lake City for her on the long-distance
'phone, and talked of breakfast
and returning to Wilmington
without trouble,but when Jailor Bryant
went to answer the 'phone from
Lake City, she dressed in his Sunday
suit, hat and necktie, slipped out of
the door and jumped the high fence
in the rear of the jail and made her
way to Palmetto street, where she
stopped some negro cooks going to
Bervice and asked for a car. While
she was talking to them,Mr J E Justice
saw that she was a woman dressed
in man's clothes and arrested her
but she broke from him and fled. He
thought she was a German spy and
started pursuit. She leaped over a
fence that was one rail too high for
Mr Justice,but the pursuit was taken
up by those on the other side, and
after bogging through recently
drowned gardens and flying like a
bird over fences and around corners
she was ingloriously taken,and then,
like a woman, she ci'- d, and then,
like men, everyor.e v iio had caught
her wanted to help her run away
some more and not catch her, or,
catching her, keep her away from
the horrid Sheriff,for she was young
and pretty,but the Sheriff was right
there in the crowd.andheis a mighty
soft-hearted Sheriff, but he does his
duty, and his duty was to take her
back to jail, which he did, and she
was again properly attired and sent
to Wilmington on the morning train.
Rumor has it that old Dan Cupid
has just about played havoc with
the career of single blessedness of a
popular Kingstree couple, and indi- j
cations are that they are to embark j
soon on the old matrimonial barge, '
henceforth to face with a sterner j
reality the vicitudes of a real, genu- j
ine existence. Both parties are j

circle of relatives amonjr their wellwishers
but a host of friends who
would cheerfuliy throw out a life
line should the old barge upon which
they are soon embark ever become
unseaworthy or danger threatened.
Both the young lady and gentleman
