THE WRONG CORPSE.
Thereby Causing Consternation among
Dillon's Colored Populace.
Dillon, April 26:?There was a
strange ease of mistaken identity

Jones with a score of friends and
relatives were assembled at the Atlantic
Coast Line Passenger station

V A day or two ago the wife of Jones
I received a telegram from the authorI
ities of a munitions plant stating i
! that Jones had been killed in an ex-,
plosion in the plant. Jones' wife
sent $100 for the preparation of the
body for burial and for the expenses
of transportation. When the negroes
opened the coffin upon its arrival
they found that it was not '
Jones but the body of an entirely
different person. They have not as \e
understood how the mistake could |
have been made and are much ex- j
cited over the experience.
This emphsizes the strangeness to ,
the negroes of this section of the fan-ki'stK

of the negroes who have emigrated i
to the North for the past few j
months. Numbers of them have j
died.
To add to the perplexity of the'
excitement among the negroes in!
this particular case, the wife of j
JoDes today received a letter from :
her husband stating that he was all
right and enjoying good health. The:
Dillon authorities have taken cogni-:

zance of the letter and will use it as
a clue to the location of Jones as j
about one a year ago he killed 1 a;
negro barber employed at A B Gib-;
son's barber shop in Dillon and fled
to North Carolina and had not been j
heard of since until now. The negro j
killed was Albert Johnson.
The Sheriff will follow up the cluej
an i if Jones is still alive and can be j
found he will be brought back to j
Dillon for trial.

SPLENDID TRIBUTES
Paid by British and French to Memory j
of Washington.
At Mount Vernon last Sunday
Great Britain publicly paid homage
to the memory of the man who led
the struggle for Americen independence
and tore one of the brightest
jewels from her crown when Minister
Balfour placed a wreath on
Wafhington's tomb.

be the cause of liberty.

liberty would be better placed than
here at the tomb of Washington.
But as that work has been so adequately
done by a master of oratory,
perhaps you will permit me to reau
a few words prepared by the British
mission for the wreath we are to
leave here today.

patriot, who would have rejoiced
to see the country of which
he was by birth a citiiien and the
country which his genius called into
existence, fighting side by side to
save mankind from subjection to a

MEN TO BE DRAWN LIKE JURORS.
How the New Army Conscription Bill
Will Probably Operate.
After the army conscription bill
is signed every township in the country
will he registering its young
men for duty, ar.d work will have
begun on the sixteen training cantonments
or camps where preparation
of the forces for war will start
in August or September. Eligibles
are young men between the ages of
21 and 27.
Registration will be carried on
through Sheriffs and other county
officials, aided by postmasters or
other federal agencies where that
seeems desirable.,
On a date to be set every citizen
affected by the act will be required
on pain of heavy penalty t<> present
himself at the nearest registration
place.
With the rolls of those liable for
service complete, the task of selecting
the men to go in the first increment
of 500,000 will begin. It
has been decided that this will be
done in a manner similar to that of >
drawing the county jurors. The |
first man whose name is drawn would
go under that plan with the first
500,000 to be called out for training
within a few months. The second
drawn would go with the second increment
to be called six months
later; the third with the third increment,
with duty a year off; the
fourth with the first increment and
so on.
Must Not Imitate Crossing Signals.
The railroad commission called attention
Monday to the act of the
Legislature, effective Tuesday, "to
prohibit the use of crossing signs
except by steam and electric railways
and to provide a penalty therefor."
The act provides that it shall be
unlawful for any "person, firm or j
corporation to use for advertising |
purposes the kind of a cross usually!
used as a crossing sign by steam orj
electric railroads."
The fine for violation of this act is
$100 or 30 days imprisonment. Thei
County Supervisors are required toj
warn all merchants, who are using!
such signs, to have them destroyed, j

Land Bank Appraisor.
Manning, April 30:?The Hon A
C Bradham of Manning received
notice this morning from the treasuary
department at Washington,
that he had been appointed an appraisor
under the Federal Land Loan
Bank, his field of operation to be
the eastern half of South Carolina.
Mr Bradham has been repeatedly
elected to the office of rr^ayor of the
town of Manning and now holds that
position. He is a young man of extensive
business experience, and is
well qualified for the duty of appraising
land values.
Rev Louis J Bristow, a former
editor of The Record, will deliver
the address at Elmwood cemetery,

The Congress of Bishops of the
Southern Methodist church has appointed
Bishop Atkins to preside
over the South Carolina conference, '

conference November 14.
