Tobacco Warehouse Sold--Mayor's

Lake City, April 3:?W H Whitehead,
Jr. Esq, was in Manning Monday
on professional business.
Messrs Brooks Daniels and Luther
Poston, left here Tuesday night to
join the navy. These young men
live in the Hannah section. They
are readv to do their "bit" for their
country.
Monday morning the mayor had j

charged with gambling, .Seven of i
them plead guilty and were fined J
ten dollars each; the eighth stood j
trial and was acquitted. If he is J
not allowed to get drunk or play
"skin," what will cuffy do?
Mrs C D Rollins was taken to the
Florence infirmary last week, and
operated upon for appendicitis. The
operation was successful in every
way, and she js getting well rapidly.
. Mv-D Moultrie Epps has bought
the "Gleen tobacco warehouse." Mr
J A Gleen, who was the owner of
the warehouse until sold to Mr
Epps, came down from his home in
Rockingham county, North Carolina,
last week and made the trade. Mr
Epps conveyed to Mr Gleen the twostory
dwelling and half-acre lot in
the pines near the west end of Main
street and paid the difference in
eash for the warehouse and lot. Mr
Epps will lease the warehouse for
the coming season.
Messrs W M Severance, Ashton H
Williams and Melvin Thompson
went down to Kingstree Tuesday
and 3pent the day.
In the ball game Friday.Lake City
defeated Darlington 4 to 1.

Salters Depot, April 2:?We are
having some fine weather after the
rain of the past week or two, and
cotton planting is quite general. We
hear from various sections that the
farmers are turning their attention
mo>e to grain crops this year than
usual>and we are glad to note this.
From present indications there will
be a large crop of sweet potatoes
planted shis year, which we are glad
to note, also
Messrs King and Fblsom. from
near Auburn, 3pent several days

Sunday here with friends and relatives.

Mr L D Clark and family wish to
express their deep appreciation of
the kindness extended them during
their bereavement occasioned by the
desth of their beloved son, Clarence
B Clark, who died of pneumonia on
March 10 on the Mexican border
while serving as a soldier.
The body of this young man
reached the home of his parents
near Cades on Sunday night, March
18, and was buried at Hebron church
the following day. services being
conducted by Rev Godbold in the
presence of a large concourse of
sorrowing friends.
