A State of Anxiety Exists.
The papers everywhere are saying!
that in consequence of the destruc- j
tion of three of the United States's ;
ships by the Germans that a state of'
.var mm exists between the United
Slates ami Germany. This is one:
country ith which ours has not been
in contact before. We have not
sought the war. It has been forced i
upon us. The American people do :
not want war even now.but they can
see no way out of it. All of this is ;
having a disastrous effect upon our :
home enterprises. Efforts to raise
money for religious and charitable j
causes and even for the promotion j
of education will surely have cold
water thrown upon them. How will!
it be with the Thorn well Orphanage? i
We have aided and are aiding Belgian,
Syrian, and Armenian orphans.
We must not omit to aid our own.
Three hundred of these are at the
I hornwell Home and Schools for Orphans,
Clinton, S C. There will be !
trouble for them unless our people:
realize the necessities of the ease and j
send tluiir gifts promptly, so as to j
prevent any fear of want.
Contributions may be directed .'.Oj

Statos, and from al! the leading de-1
nominations. Ten dollars a montncovers
the expenses of each one, includ- J

AUTOMOBILE CAN BE TAKEN
By Party Injured by It, No Matter
\Y ho Owns It.
A case of considerable moment' t
atui interest to all automobile own- j
ers has just been decided by the su- 1
preme court. The case had its in-! I
ception in Dillon county and was 'i
carried to the supreme court from . ?
Dillon county, the title of the case <
being Merchants and Planters Bank i(
nf Muliins. against S V Lane. Sheriff i
of Dillon county. The case arose '
under the statute of South Carolina,
giving to any person damaged by an
automobile the right to seize such
automobile by attachment. In the j
instant case, Y H Hyatt was injured
by an automobile of M W Brigman. n
Hyatt seized the automobile through
Sheriff Lane, and the Merchants I
and Planters Bank of Mulling, hav- i
ing a chattel mortgage past due on
the automobile, brought action to [ I
take the automobile from the Sheriff.!
The Sheriff resisted the action, but i
the lower court gave judgment
against the Sheriff and awarded the !
automobile to the Merchants and;
Planters Bank on the ground that
the act of the Legislature giving
the right to seize an automobile was
unconstitutional.
The Sheriff appealed to the su- j
pre me court and the judgment of 1
the lower court was reversed in a!,
recent" opi ion by Associate Justice!
Watts, and the supreme court
awarded the automobile to theji
Sheriff holding that rho act is con-;|
stitutional.
Sheriff Lane was represented by],
Joe P Lane and G G McLaurin.
