Splendid Opportunity to Serve

order that the great advatages
t that the United States navy offers
I to young men, Americans of good
uKarootur and rppnirnizintr the fact
that the population of South Carolina
is of a high order of intelligence,
preponderantly native born, the
navy department has decided to
authorize a traveling and recruiting
party for this State. The department,
through the generosity of
Congress and its own progressive
policy, is able to offer splendid inducements
to every young man who
measures up to our standards. The
country needs the men, but thousands
of young South Carolinians
need the navy and would be greatly
benefitted by joining right now.
We desire to make this campaign as
thorough as possible in order to feel
sure that no man in this State,
through ignorance of what the navy
offers, fails to take advantage of
this splendid opportunity to b^ter
himself and serve his country. It
is especially to be desired that all of
cur people shpulu consider the navy
"'our navy.* Now, the best way to!
accomplish this is to have the par- j
^ats investigate and see for therr,selves
just what the navy has to
offer. After becoming convinced
that our claim to take their boy and
benefit him financially, morally,
crtentally. and physically is founded
on fact they should encourage him
to enlist. The plain facts are that
there is no - family in this country
who should not feel proud to have a
representative in the navy, Patriotism
should begin at home and the
-kind of person who professes patriotism,
but wants * George to do it",

of the navy department to implant
the seed of thought; to impress upon
the young men of the country
that the navy of the present day is
a great institution; that it is the
place for intelligent, honest, upright,
young men and that a four year enlistment
will be of incalculable benefit
to any man. This seed, once
implanted, will cause investigation,
which will in turn bring forth desired
results. It is requested that
J you urge your readers to call at the
offices of the traveling party located
in the city nearest their home on
the dates set forth on current
schedule,and to talk to the men who
I ? have been through the mill; who
can speak from experience of years,
and who can vouch for the increased
morale and the numerous benefits
of our navy; to ask questions and to
receive answers, even though they
do not at the time desire to enlist in
the navy.
When the main recruiting party
arrives, on 15, it will establish
offices in tne Dreviously
Mm, secured; will interview all eligible
young men who desire information,
i||ju ^^OT^srpplicants and applications,
^^^and conduct examinations.
The procedure will be as follows:
Any man wishing to be examined
will apply at the office, make out an
application, then he will be given
the preliminary physical examina/
tion. If he passes this preliminary
* examination, he will be given a tick(
et to Charleston and told to report
1 at the navy recruiting station at
I that place for the final physical ex[
amination. Upon completion of
I this final examination, if the appli[
-cant passes, he will be enlisted and
sent to the training station, Norfolk,
Va, if he fails to pass, he will be
given a ticket good for a return
trip to his home. It will thus be
seen that everything has been ar^
ranged for the convenience and welfare
of the applicant and that the
F government stands all expenses.

If we are successful in obtaining
all of the recruits needed, without
diffculty.it will demonstrate that
the patriotism of our young men is

mniyersal training will have meat

we are unsuccessful, advocates of
I . .military training will point to the
I xunwilling attitude of our boys to
B serve in time of need as proof that
Hl compulsory service is necessary for
, any reliable system ?f national defense.

Mr Dingle Montgomery and family
of Elloree visited the home of his
parents last week-end.
We are glad to report that these
sick with measles are convalescing.
Mr Robert W Boyd died at his
home in Columbia Thursday, leaving
a wife, seven children, two brothers
and a sister to mourn their loss. He
was born and reared in Williamsburg
county.
Miss Isadora Way of Elloree is
finishing out the unexpired term of
Miss Emmie Oliver at Mt Vernon
school.
The farmers in this section, after
having to replant their tobacco,have
a fine stand.
