I Grave Charges Agalnlt The Cat. There are not less than 25,000,000 cats in the United States, and a cat census might prove the actual number to be twice that, according to Dr Frank Chapman of the American Museum of Natural History. One cat to every four inhabitants is an amazing ratio. If true, it puts pussy in a position of uncomfortable prominence, thinks the New York World, liable to the kind of scathing indictment found in the current bulletin of the American Game Protective Association. The greatest menace to the bird life of today is probably the domestic cat, the prosecution is prepared to prove. Cats in Massachusetts kill approximately 2,000,000 birds each year. The farm cats of Illinois get away with 2,500,000. And in the State of New York the cat bill of fare requires annually, it is estimated, at least 3,500,000 birdlings. Now birds eat bugs, which, if not oofun thrive mio-Kitilv at thp PYnpnup of fruit, field crops and forests. Fori instance: a potato bug will produce j fifty to sixty million in a season; the green-leafed louse, so destructive to ; hops, fruit and vegetables, reproduces My folks down Sout clean and sweet anc you I am just abou ever made! Chinch bugs alone are said to have | lowered the value of Mississippi Val| leycrdps in one year by $100,000,000, while the total annual loss attributed to insect life in the United States is estimated at 1,200,000,000. Most of these destructive insects and their larvae constitute the chief food of scores of species of birds, while other species include in their diet numyous varieties of noxious weed seeds. Wherefore, in the interest of insect and weed destroying birds, the New York State Forest, Fish, and Game League recently adopted a resolution urgently requesting the Legislature of New York to enact a comprehensive law providing for th? licensing of all valuable domestic cats, and for the destruction of all unlicensed cats by thorough and effective methods.
