Constipation or inaction of the j ^ bowels, a condition that nearly j every one experiences with more or: less frequency, is the direct cause of j much disease. When the bowels! become clogged with refuse from I the stomach, foul gasses and poisons: are generated, and unless the congestion is quickly relieved the sys- j tern becomes weakened and most; susceptible to attack. Various remedies to relieve con- j stipation are prescribed, but many of these contain cathartic or purga-1 tive agents that are harsh and vio- j lent in their action and shock the! system. The most effective remedy ! is the combination of simple laxative herbs with pepsin that is sold in drug stores under the name of Dr Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin. The Hon John D Keister of Brandy- 1 wine, W Va, who has represented his district in the State Legislature ' for six years, writes that he uses Dr Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin and finds it a splendid laxative, easy to take ( and mild, yet positive, in its action, 1 and that it should.be in every house- 1 hold for use when needed. ! DrCaldwell's Syrup Pepsin is sold by druggists in all parts of the United States and costs only fifty cents 1 a bottle. " ^ In the great Teutonic Language, the word hound (hund) is related to the verb hinpan, to seize, thus meaning the seizer, and long before our i Anglo-Saxon ancestors took possess-11 ion of those wonderful little isles.thej houn^of Great Britain were famous, the Romans, eager to procure them for the chase and combats in the11 arena, the Gauls to aid their warriors1 in the fierce, bloody battles of that! period. J1 Several explanations are given to' i the origin of the name greyhound, j! the most likely heing Greek hound, ji -- - i. (Grains hound), referring to the race: I , as it developed in Greece. j The bloodhounds' name originated | in that animal's marvelous instinct j I for tracking wounded animals to their \ i lair, a talent later employed by men ? to catch runaway slaves and criminals, i their hiding place usualy proclaimed ;; by the bloodhound's baying. Dachshund, German in origin, < simply means badger dog, the hunting of badgers being its busy pur-' < pose in life. 11 The Newfoundland dog, the won-: i derful swimmer that can swim for j < an hour without resting, and has' j saved so many human lives from| drowning, prets its nam? from the 11 island of Newfoundland, but ataji remote period that race of dogs was I probably introduced into Newfound- i land from Norway, where they are t still used to hunt wolves and bears. 1i ^ The Great Dane was brought into ( 1 I r jis? j. Our Mastiff is a dog of great antiquity. The name is humble enough, being closely allied to the old French mestif, mongrel: that is, of mixed blood, but the race received its decoration of nobility when the Leigh family of Lyme hall, England, began to breed them in the fifteenth cen fury. The bulldog was used for the cruel 3port of bull baiting, trained to hold on to the bull's head and not let go. Terriers are dogs that unearth their prey, the same root as in our word territory, the fox terrier unearthing a fox, but making no attempt to kill it. The Skye terrier, with its heavy coat, suitable for the cold northern climate, comes from the Isle of Skye, Scotland, whiie the Airedale terrier is soealled for being much used , in bunting along the River Aire in Scotland. According to excellent authority the original birthplace of the spaniel race is Engiand, although the name signifies "Spanish" dog. It was first broken to set game, "as an able assistant to the net," by Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, in 1335. Charles, the First's love for the black and tan spaniel made it the fashion if his court and time. There is a tradition that this socaMed "King Charles" is always a very sad little log, the reason being thct he is still jrieving for the king's death.
