Hugo Cunliffe-Owen, vice president
of British-American Tobacco
company in this country, says: "This
nas been our big year. For twelve
months ended September 30 net
profits, after all charges and income,
tax, were $13,666,805, against $9,250,295
in previous year. An increase
of close to $5,000,000, during
the war period is a remarkable demonstration
of possibilities of our
company. ^
"A few days ago we declared a
dividend of five per cent free of
British income tax, upon ordinary
shares. This made, with interim
dividends, thirty per cent for year
ended September 30 against twentytwo
and a half per cent for year
ended September 30, 1915.
"Directors also took action on a
further cash distribution of six per
cent in an interim dividend for 1916

dividend of five per cent a year ago.
/'Stockholders will also receive a
bonus distribution of one ordinary
Canadian share of $5 par for every
four ordinary shares of BritishAmerican
Tobacco company. Stock
if Imperial Tobacco company is
quoted at $4 to $5 a share,so that this
distribution alone is equal to twenty
per cent to twenty-five per cent on
jtock of British-American concern.
Including stock and rash, our distributions
for the year just closed have
amounted to at least fifty per cent,
compared with twenty-two and a
half per cent for 1915.
"Everything is running smoothly.
During the year we opened a large
aew cigarette factory in the United
States. Our cigarette production
here is now double a year ago.
"Other countries in which we are
interested include China, India, Australia,
South Africa, Egypt, Brazil,
Argentina, England, Trinidad, Jamaica.
New Foundland, Panama.
Finland, Norway and Denmark.
"Our big business is cigarette
business, although our plug cut
tales are large. We do some cigar
business in Jamaica and Australia.
"Our pay roll now probably includes
"SO,000 employees. When
the war started it was probably
about 25,000. We have about 9,000
in England, and of these about 8,000
are women. Two years ago we saw
the danger of conscription and arranged
to replace the men with
women. The women in many instances
do the work fully as well as
men.
"When the war started we laid
aside $7,500,000 for paying losses
incurred through the war. So far
we have not had to touch it. Our"
plant is shut down in Belgium, but
our investment there is comparatively
small.
