1 FORD REAOTTO i BUCK UP NATION ' U. S. CAN HAVE IT WITHOUT IN- ] TEREST. HE SAYS-EXPLAINS j 1 A FIGHTING PACIFIST. ( i If the United States go to war, j Henry Ford's $100,000,000 or so, ' his 46,000 employees and his Detroit11 factory are at its service, and with-! j out any profit to Henry Ford. j1 "Whatever the Government needs.' 1 1 of what I've got," says Mr Ford, "it j can have without interest. I don't!' want to make anything. I don't he- j lieve in offensive fighting, but if ' anybody attacks me or attacks the * United States, I'm going to fight 1 and fight hard. ' "You can't tell about us pacifists," y Mr Ford laughed. "Sometimes I ^ think a pacifist is like a cat. It may 1 eem a gentle creature that you can fondle?an inoffensive, harmless sort ( of thing. But back a cat?or a ( pacifist?up in a corner and you've got the worst kind of a fighter ( you've ever seen." f Mr Ford didn't dwell upon his idea of lending his fortune to the % Government. He simply stated it in a quiet, matter-of-fact way. "The other day I.was on my way across New York to take a train for Washington,'' he said, "and I noticed a lot of flags flying. A good many of them seemed to be from bank buildings. They all seemed patriotic?for profit, which is what actuates nations (except our own United States) to fight wars. "But I didn't see any signs of picks or shovels, or khaki, about those bank buildings, indicating that they were offering any practical help to the Nation except what they could profit from." He did not Continue on the topic of lending: his money, lie simpiy stated that he would, and then turn- 1 ed his attention to what he could do in a manufacturing way for the President and the country. i For instace, he could manufacture < tt.OOO motor cars a day, each equip- ; ^ ped with bodies that would carry i perhaps ten men and could travel < twenty-four hours a day if necessary i at a fairly high speed: i "Think what they could transport f in the way of troops." he said. He could also make a tremendous number of "baby submarines"? little undersea craft to be manned by a single individual, which would carry at their noses "pills on poles," [ the pills to be h.gh explosives, and the "poles" to be long, protruding arrangements which would guaran- i tee safety to the operator. < These, Mr Ford says, could destroy 1 the most powerful battleship an enemy might send here and naturally, could wipe out any troopships by which an enemy might endeavor to : land invaders. ""it ? 00 o I II Siatte Ul> ici'uiauuu ao a manufacturer on those little submarines," Mr Ford said. And he admitted that considerable experimentation had been done with them in the last few years?altogether successfully. i SPANELL TRIAL APRIL 9. j Charged with Killing Col Butler at Alpine, Texas. The prices were extra good, rangng from 10c per lb down for hogs; ?nd 6?c per pound down for cows.! K striking incident in this sale was :he fact that pure bred stock sold i vithout exception for good prices. I \ll the buyers seemed especially anxous to buy corn and hogs. There were 150 cows and ^00 hogs )ffered for sale and practically every >nesold. The crowd attending the sale was ;stimated at about two thousand farmers, from three counties. Those who did not bring anything for sale came to see how a sale of this rind was conducted. Hundreds of them went home highly pleased with the manner in which the sale was carried out and will no doubt be at the next sale with cows and hogs of their own to offer. Owing to the recent snow storm in the West, Mr Truluck was unable to get the car of bred cows and the 200 pigs. Another sale will be held in the near future, and at this sale the bred cows and hogs will be offered. The boys are reminded of the fact that the banks are willing to lend them the money to buy a pig, provided they furnish good endorsement.?Lake Ctfi/ A ewe. FOOD COST INQUIRY. PrealdentCalls For Investigation of High Prices 01 Necessities. Washington, Feb 10,?At the direction of President Wilson, the federal trade commission and the department of agriculture will begin an immediate investigation into the causes of advancing food prices in the United States with special reference to alleged violations of the anti-trust acts. An emergency appropriation will be asked of Congress for the inquiry. The trade commission announced % today that it had held a conference with agricultural department officials to work out preliminary plans for the investigation and at the same time, it made public President Wilson's request of the inquiry. An adequate food supply, a matter of concern to the nation at all times, is of peculiar importance at the present, the President declared, and added that "it is of the highest public concern to ascertain the truth or falsity" of allegations that the course of trade and food stuffs is "restricted and controlled by artificial means." Business Denresslon. We do not think that there is any reason whatever for business depression on account of the break with Germany. Even if war is declared it should not result in depression. As we see it there was no reason for the slump in business when the European war was declared, but we had the depression all the same. We believe that business men are themselves responsible for this depression. They get shaky and begin to feel that something terrible is going to happen, and this has as had or even worse effect than if the expected did happen. ? Greenwood, Journal.
