As superintendent of the Mule
department of the Williamsburg
Fair association, I wish to call attention
to our people that premiums
offered under Horse department for
similar classes will also apply to
mules. This was so intended by our
committee appointed to revise our
premium list for 1916. but in send- !
ir.g copy to printers the error occurred.
I hope our people will make an;
earnest effort to make our Mule department
larger and better than last j
year. Let us bring what we have I
and better the best. Ample room
has been provided for taking care of
all stock and none need fear our not
having stalls sufficient to care for
them properly. We are asking the
/ united effort of our people, even un-1
der the discouraging conditions, in
making the fair the biggest and best
to be had. 1

The Art Department.
Editor County Record:
As the time draws near for our
annual fair, we feel a great deal of
solicitude for the success of the Art
department. Last year there was a
fairly good number of pictures in oil
and water color, hand-painted china,
crayon work, painting on tapestry,
etc, which made a very pleasing display,but
this year we desire a larger
and more varied exhibit. We trust
that those who are interested in art
will do all they can by sending as
many exhibits as possible, to make
permanent this department.
A fine art exhibit probably speaks
better for the genius, and certainly
the culture,of a community or county
than would the exhibits in any
other department. A person who is
the possessor of any fine objects of
art, such as paintings, statuary, etc,
though he may not be able to produce
them,and be no genius himself,
shows himself to be somewhat of a
connoisseur in the field of art, and
his appreciation of these objects in a
private collection should induce him
to put them on public exhibition,
where he gives others the benefit of
what he enjoys. So in our department,
any picture or article which is
a true work of art and will add tone

of the owner,may be entered, particularly
where the work was done in
this county.
Any work done by hand in such a
superior manner as to put it in the
fine arts class, not necessarily a picture,
but rugs woven by hand, old
samples, etc; rare old book bindings
also.
I believe practically everyone who
attended the fair last year visited
the art department and much interest
was evidenced. We hope there
will be even more enthusiasm felt
this year.
Of course all the territory embraced
cannot be canvassed, but we
take this method of appealing to the
devotees of art in the county and
confidently expect them to co-operwith
us heartily in this work and to
show their interest by sending as
many exhibits as possible.
Should any further information be
desired, it will be cheerfully given.

Fine Exhibits of Horses Urged.

As superintendent of the Horse ,
department, I want to urge the people
of our county to unite their efforts
in making this department one
of the largest and best at our county
fair. Ample room has been provided
for the proper taking care of mules
and sucking colts and all stock covered
by our department. It is the
earnest hope of our association that
our people will put on exhibit what
they have,and thus show their inter-'
est in the work of the betterment of
this department of our association.

J. E. ELLERBE DEAD.
Former Congressman irom This
District uies in Asnevme.
Marion, October 17:?News was
received here today of the death this
morning in Asheville of J E Ellerbe,
former Congressman from this district.
Mr Ellerbe for more than a
year has been in ill health and bis
death was not entirely unexpected
by his friends. His body will be
brought here and the funeral services
will -he at the home of his
daughter, Mrs J N Glover, Thursday
morning. The interment will
take place at Hazelden cemetery in
the county.
Mr Ellerbe was a brother of former
Governor Ellerbe and has large
family connections in Marion and
Dillon counties. Of his immediate
family his wife, two sons. J E Ellerbe,
Jr, of Winston-Salem, N C,
and Ernest Ellerbe of Lake City,
and one daughter, Mrs J N Glover
of Marion, Survive.
FATAL SHOOTING AFFAIR.
Farmer Kills His Would-be Slayer
and Surrenders.
Camden, October 23:?Wesley McCaskill,
a prominent farmer who
lives near the Lee county line in this
county, shot and instantly killed his
brother-in-law. W T Smith, Jr, early
this morning.
McCaskill had endeavored to collect
money owed by Smith. The
latter, it is said, flew into a rage,
pulled his pistol and fired at McCaskill
four times, hitting him twice,
once in the head and in the back
but inflicting only flesh wounds,
McCaskill dodged behind a tree and
wrenched the pistol from the enrag-J

to have advanced upon him with his
knife. McCaskill fired with Smith's
pistol, killing him instantly.
McCaskill immediately surrendered

very pleasant autumn weather, nearing
frost at night.
Crops have about all been gachei.
