THE COUNTY RECORD.
THURSDAY. SEPT. 21. 1916.
Cotton is steadily advancing in
price, and to enable the farmers to
reap the benefits they should hold
their cotton off the market for the
present. It is thought by men who
have studied the situation that cotton
will go to 20c per pound before
the 1917 crop is harvested.
#
The State Warehouse System was
established to enable farmers to
hold their cotton and borrow money
on cotton certificates at low rates.
There are several of these warehouses
in the county at the disposal
of farmers who wish to hold their
cotton.

The third visitation 01 me iuiucliffe
Chautauqua attractions in
Kingstree is scheduled for November
7, 8 and 9. Heretofore these
attractions have been a source of
splendid entertainment and highly
enjoyed by the people of the county.
Last year the guarantors fell short
in the amount of money pledged and
had to make up the difference out
of their own pockets. This was
probably due to bad weather. But
we trust that the people of the town
and county will remember that the
mem who sign for this course of
high class entertainment do not do
so with a view to making money; all
they want is enough to pay expenses
and it behooves you to lend your
assistance to those who have taken it
upon themselves to bring these entertainments
into the town, by purchasing
season tickets.
The chautauqua will be here during
two days of the county fair and
should be a success in all particulars.
The place of holding will be decided
upon as soon as a meeting of the
guarantors can be held and this
should be done without delay.
Richard I. Manning.
A correspondent of the Bishopville
Leader and Vindicator sends
the following to that paper from
Stokes Bridge:
Come all ye "Bleasites"
If you want to know,
The story of how the election did go:
Richard I Manning,
Is the rounder's name,
Jn the Governor's office
'Where he won his fame.
iHe has been our Governor
.For the last two years,
In spite of all the Bleasites' tears;
They fought mighty hard,
But 'twas all in vain
Far Richard I Manning
wis our Governor's name.
' Chorus:
Rirh-arH T Manninc
Who still holds his office,
Richard I Manning
; Is the rounder's name,
./Richard I Manning
Has been re elected
. For the Governor's office
vWhere he won his fame.
Hurrah for Manning.
This little song of only one verse
and chorus can be easily sung to the
tune of Casey Jones.

ly pier that would in all likelihood
j have been smashed to hits or badly
damaged by the billows. He was
able to perform this seeming marvel
at El Segundo, Cal., by means
' j of a breakwater of bubbles.
This novel breakwater is noth^
j ing more than iron pipe laid upon
^ i the ocean's sandy bottom. It is
pierced with small holes, from
^ j which streams of air bubbles can
j rise surfaceward when compressed
! air is forced into the piping. The
j pipes are laid so as to rest right
I across the path of the oncoming
waves, and the rising bubbles catch
^ the waves before they can reach the
pier and rob them of their strength
ls bv upsetting tiie motion inside of
; the waves. The billows collapse
' like stricken giants and then roll
landward without power enough
left to do the pier harm. "But,"
you will ask, "how can air bubbles
do what a big stone wall sometimes
y fails to do ?"
n To the eye each wave seems to
I be a separate body of surging wa;o
ter and apparently goes sweeping
d along. But this is not really the
;s fact The mass of the water does
ir not move forward. A wave robbed
of its internal motion collapses and
cannot pass on this motion to the
water next ahead of it In short,
it cannot create another wave. The
way to upset this internal motion,
^ then, is to disturb or break up the
j body of the wave. Mr. Brasher
does this by the explosive action of
rising air bubbles, and thus he halts
1 the travel of the energy which
causes wave after wave.?Robert Q.
Skerrett in St Nicholas.

He Was Only One.
lt A soldier who had just enlisted
was placed on guard over a cannon.
It was not long before he abandoned
his post and went to a tavern
not far off, where he indulged in
^ the flowing bowl.
"Fellow, why did you abandon
your post?" exclaimed the captain,
who happened to put in an appearn
ance.
"Captain." was the reply of the
incipient son of Mars, "I've tried
to lift that cannon, and I'm satisfied
no one can carry it away, and if
more than one of the enemy comes
after it I can't keep them off."
" Strength of Paper.
Froip an examination of various
ir papers, prepared with different proy
portions of rags, sizing and loading,
[" it appears that the mechanical
' properties are improved by increas,r
ing the proportion of rags. Resin
sizing diminishes the strength, while
y animal sizing increases it. An in^
crease in the proportion of rags,
n also sizing of any kind, enables a
larger proportion of loading mater=?
ial to be retained by the paper.
, Loading decreases the strength of
all papers, the percentage of loss
approximating 2.2 times the per s
centage of loading material.
