The German Submarine.
In the opinion of the New York
World the Germans hare scored a
big l?eat by sending the submarine
Peutschland across the Atlantic. At
both ends of the voyage it mocked
the vigilance of British sea patrols.
It was a clever performance, in keeping
with the enterprise and ingenuft
ity of the German people.
The coming of the visitor had
lieen so noisily heralded as to raise
suspicions uliout the sincerity of the
announcement. The final answer
to ail sceptics is the appearaiee of
the underset. Iwat in American
waters.
Within the last two year* longer
voyages have lieen made by the submarines
of the warring nations.

that which siiik the Lu si tarda, lias
probably reached two weeks. There
are said to he records of boats that
covered 12,000 mi las and remained
away from their bases for tw?i
months. At 3,000 miles from Kiel
to Hampton Reads, the Deutschlaml's
trip above and under
water was well within the cruising
radius of modern submarines.
It is the nature of the Deutschland's
errand, not the feat of
crossing the Atlantic, that lends importance
to its visit. If it came as
ja war vessel, its stay would be brief
or it would be interned until the
| end of the war. If a ship of commerce,
a submarine is free to come
I and go, at its own risk bevond the
I three-mile limit. Hun Ireds of Brit|

men hare entered and left our ports
' since the beginniag of the war. The
j arrival of a German cargo in any
German ship, most of all in a submarine,
is an event. It is only
made possible by the skill of theGer,
mans in outwitting their enemies.
Except under the stresa of war,
no experiment such as the Deutachland
aobrilliantly carried through
! would be worth while. Little was
' it thought, u the submarine was
' developed, tVi&t it would be convert'

the Germane have demonstrated
that it ten lee made to eerve as a

; It is just such statements from

Mr Cain, who hold the highest
esteem of the community in which
they live, that have prompted others

testimony.
