Among those attending the Sunday-school convention now in session at Sumter are: Misses Tyson McFaddin, Annie Stackley, Martha and Emma Gordon, Messrs Sam Stackley, W E Nesmith and Alex Gordon. Friends in town will regret to hear of the Jeath of Mrs M A Tucke which occurred in Ocala, Fla, Tuesday, July 4. Mrs Tucke was a sister of the late Mr Edwin Harper and at one time resided in Kingstree, Mrs Bertha S Wolfe has recently purchased a handsome baby grand Kranich & Bach piano of the Siegling Music house for her daughter. Miss Stella Louise. The piano was purchased through Mr S D Carr and was installed by Mr T S Nipson, Jr, of the Florence branch store. Mr Joseph R Walker entered upon his duties at the Episcopal church here Sunday, preaching two fine sermons to deeply interested congregations. The litany will be read tomorrow at 6 p. m. and services next Sunday will be held at 11 a m. and 8:30 p. m. All cordially invited. The regular monthly meeting of the missionary society of the Methodist church will be held Tuesday afternoon, July 11, at 5 o'clock. The Scarrett will be conducted by Mrs Selden Epps Bryan. The first load of tobacco wag brought to Kingstree last Friday by Mr Wm Stafford, a successful farmer on the west side of Hlack river near Kingstree. This tobacco is said to be of good quality and is being taken care of by Messrs Watts, Lee & Powell, proprietors of Gorrell's warehouse. Mrs David Silverman, whose illness has been previously mentioned in this paper, and who was thought last week to be getting along nicely at a Charleston infirmary, has been taken to Baltimore for further treatment. It is hoped that she will soon return to Kingstree permanently cured of her ailment. The ladies of the Methodist church propose to send a "box" to the Door of Hope, Columbia, Thursday, July 13. They expect to fill this box with dry goods, non-perishable groceries, etc, to be contributed by ladies of the town and community. Contributors are requested to send articles to Mrs John F McFadden before the 13th inst. The first meeting of the new County Commissioners was held here last Saturday The new commission is composed of Messrs B B Chandler of Rome, D E McCutchen. Nesmith, R B Fitch, Lake City, R F D, and J M Brown of Kingstree, R F D. The commission organized. Supervisor J N Hammett is chairman of the board. Its regular meetings will be held on the first Tuesday in each month. The tremendous offensive which has been launched by the British army on the German front is the culmination of a five-day bombardment which, in the amount of ammunition expended and in the territory involved, exceeds anything of the kind that had been previously known in the world war. For some weeks reports have been current in England and France that the "big push" of the British was about to commence. It was stated that England had 2,000,000 men, fully equip ped and trained, in preparation for the supreme effort to break the German lines. More than 1,000,000 shells are declared to have been fired daily in the preliminary bombardment, which extended over a front ninety miles in length. Taking Big Chances. She was 42 vears of age at the time of her s c death and had been suffering for i the past year from cancer. Tho nnoninor cramp was won bv the home team by a score of 6 to 1. On Friday afternoon the second ahd best game of the series was played and won by the Red Sox, the score being 2 to 1. Saturday's game also went to the home team by a score of 5 to 4. They were all good (fames and the most enthusiastic fan appeared satisfied with the results, but that is a usual consequence when the home team is victorious. The fact is, the Red Sox were just a little too strong for the Gate City boys, as is clearly shown by the record of each game. The decisions <*f Umpire Murphy were absolutely impartial and not once was there an jccasion for pawing the earth or an indulgence in a spirited argument by players on either team. What the 'Ump" said was law and it stood without protest. A large :rowd was present to witness the afternoon game and many were disappointed when a downpour of rain 3et in and preyented the play, which necessitated a double heffder y?3teriay. The first game was called at 3 o'clock and was won by the Red Sox by a score of 3 to 1. By a?reement the second game was for anly seven innings as the Bishopville team had to leave on the 6:40 train. The game resulted in a tie score of 3 to 3. The Red Sox will play at it Lamar today, tomorrow and Saturday. On Monday they will open i series with Bennettsville on the nome ground.
