OLANTA FIGHTS NEW COUNTY IDEA. BOTH OLANTA AND JOHNSONV1LLE PITTED AGAINST LAKE CITY FOR COUNTY SEAT. This committee was appointed bj a citizen's meeting to visit certair sections in the territory of the pro nnspd new countv of Rutledge ir order to ascertain the sentiment with regard to the proposed new county. At Cowards we found some opposed, but got the impression that the majority favored Rutledge. However, many of this majority was opposed to-any change, but had gotten out a petition for a new county, and that they would be pulled into that if they did not rally and make Rutledge Succeed, and naturally they favor Lake City of the two as it is more convenient for them. But we corrected that wrong impression by assuring them that it is not now the intention of this section when it tries to get a new county to include either Cowards or Scranton. So we believe that many of those who were in favor of Rutledge will now oppose it. At Scranton almost all of the sentiment seemed for Rutledge, but many seemed confident that Scran ton would get the county seat. So far as we could learn at Prospect there is little prospect of Rutledge getting any votes. There were conflicting reports with regard to the Hannah section section of Florence coanty. At Johnsonville the sentiment was strongly opposed, in fact we got the impression that only two or three favored the new county proposed and they only because of business connections. It would seem that from the information that we gathered that Hymanville and Indiantown are strongly opposed, but that there will be a considerable split in the vole at Vox, Cades and Hebron. To sum up: The people whom we met in eastern Williamsburg, almost to a man, seemed perfectly confident that it will be impossible to get a two-thirds vote in that part of Wil liamsburg which is prooosed to include Rutledge county. In fact, the people over there had somehow gotten the impression that Olanta and community was working in harmony with Lake City, but said they were perfectly confident even under that impression that the proposition would not succeed. We corrected ' that wrong impression by telling them that we were a committee chosen by the citizens of Olanta for the opposite of working in union with Lake City. Of course there are some in Olanta who will sign a petition and possibly vote for Rutledge, but they do not constitute the majority, and are not sufficiently strong to attend any of the several citizens' meetings and speak openly in favor of the proposed new county of Rutledge. Now, we are not fighting Lake City or any other city, as a city, or any person as an individual, nor do we blame Lake City for her ambition to become a county seat. As we now see it the best interests of Olanta and surrounding territory, especially that to the west, demands the defeat of the Rutledge proposition. The same is true of the large territory east of Lake City. Should! the proposed Rutledge county succeed there would be hundreds of people in the territory mentioned above who wouM live 25 miles from a county seat as lens: as they live. Therefore, it is to the interest of both of these sections to try to defeat the proposition, and it is risrht that they do it if they will do it justly and honorably. If we don't do it for our own personal interest, let's do it for the sake of the major* ity and future generations.? The Investigating Committee in Olanta Observer.
