I want!I to persuade at least some of them I to take up the study of Palestine. :1 I know of no study that would in- ? B terest and benefit them more. If E we become interested in news from S a certain place, such as the great i E European war, we turn to our maps, I and get each place fixed in ouriB minds. If we go away from home, 3 how gladly we turn to the columns of gj i our County Record for news from i I I the daces we know. And so you all \ fl will find it a pleasure to follow our | Sunday-school lessons regularly. Pal- j estine, as some of you might know, \ is a narrow strip of country, not j quite as large as our own State,; bordering on the eastern side of the i Mediterranean sea. This land was; first called Canaan; from ?anaan,j the son of Ham; also the Land of i Promise, from its being promised by j God to Abraham; also the Land of ;E Israel, from the Israelites; some-, I times it is mentioned as the Land j I of Judea, from Juda, the principal; of the twelve tribes. It is now: known as Palestine, from the Philistines, who inhabited the southwestern part of the country. It is often referred to as the Holy Land, from its being the scenes of the greater part of the transactions recorded in the Bible and particularly of the birth, life miracles and crucifixion of our Savior. The Jordan, the celebrated river of Palestine, is deep and rapid, but very narrow. -It flows into the Dead sea after passing through the sea of Galilee. This is one of the planes so often mention-, ed in the Bible and you ail should study it well and learn all you -can . about this beautiful lake which is about 14 miles long and three miles wide. It was on this sea that so many miracles were performed by our Savior. Near the sea of Galilee oovomI a# disrinlpfi were called. It was Dear its borders that much of our Savior's time was spent. The two principal centers of his labors during his ministry were the Sea of Galilee and Jerusalem and its vicinity. I wonder how many of our Sunday-school scholars remember His prophecies concerning the great buildings of Jerusalem when He said that '"not one stone shall be left standing upon another"? Yet it was only 37 years before it was tak- ffi en and destroyed by Titus and his I army. Again when he looked out g| over the city and said, "Jerusalem, i Jerusalem, how oft would I have gathered thee as a hen gathereth her brood and ye would not." What has been the result of its wickedness and unbelief? The Israelites who were given all this land, the chosen people of God, are now scattered to the four corners of the world and are people without a country. I wonder if there are any parents who will pack their children off to Sunday-school with no help on their lessons. No wonder our Sunday schools have so few attendants. Now, in conclusion, I want you all to remember that on the east of the city is the Mount of Olives, where He went after eating the passover. Between the Mount of Olives and the city is Gethsemane, where He was betrayed. On the north side of Jerusalem was Calvary where He was crucified. Northeast of the city was Bethany where he raised Lazarus from the dead and the place from which he ascended to Heaven. I want you all not to forget that it was on Friday, April 3, A D 33, that our Savior was crucified and on the following Sunday He arose from the dead, and upon this fact rests all the hope of the entire Christian world.
