We have been requested to say that cattle owners within a ten-mile radius of Mr W 0 Camlin's place at Rlnnmintrvnlp arp urtred to take their cattle to Mr Camlin's dipping vat on Thursday,Friday and Saturday,June 1, 2 and 3, on which days a government official who has charge of tick eradication in Williamsburg county will be present to see that the cattle are properly dipped. In this connection The County Record wishes to express the desire that every cattle owner in Williamsburg county will take advantage of the apportunity and assistance now being offered by the Federal Government in the effort tc exterminate the cattle tick in this county, so that the quarantine now hanging over our cattle may be* lifted and the owner become free to. ship his stock into other counties. Mr L D Rodgers has charge of the tick eradication work in this community and is working hard to reach every cattle owner in his territory, so that be may be of assistance in the way of abolishing this destructive evil and freeing the herds from its deadly effects by spraying. There is only one dipping vat in the county that we know of, though there may be others. This one is on Mr Camiin's place at Bloomingvale. It is his private property but was constructed under the supervision of a Federal officer in charge of such work and was built in accordance with the specifications of the United States Government. Mr Camlin is offering the free use of his dipping plant to the stock raisers within ten \ miles of his place. The goravin? Drocess used by Mr Rodgers is perhaps as effective as the dipping process, but in the large pastures it is next to impossible for him to go into a community and round up all the cattle. He can do his work effectively only through the co-operation of the cattle owners or | bleeders who have their stock confined within small pasture areas. This paper has recently published a number of articles from the United States Agricultural department relating to tick eradication in other States and setting forth- in unmistakable terms the destructiveness, the enormous loss in money value to cattle raisers wrought by the deadly fever or Texas tick, and we do earnestly urge and hope that every cattle raiser in Williamsburg county will awake to the importance of exterminating this pest by taking advantage of the opportunities now being offered with that end in view. Editor County Record:? In your issue of May 18, I see "Fisherman" makes appeal for protection of Black river fish. I, too, think that the fish need more protection than they get. Now, the only plan that I see whereby the fish can be protected, is by cooperation of the people living on or near the liver, with the game warden and rural police. That can be done in this way, let the people who own the land on the river, post their land, and forbid any fishing, &c, without written permission from the owner of the lfoid. Then let the game warden and rural police patrol the river and every one they find fishing on some one else's land with out this written permission be dealt with as a trespasser according to law. Then there will be less destruction of fish and stock. There have been complaints of hogs, &c, having been killed by those fishing parties that come in here from other places. Sheriff Killed by dodge's Son fa Georgia Sunday. Anderson, May 21: ?Sheriff ! Newton Hailey of Elbert countj Georgia, wa9 shot and instantly kill ed today shortly after noon by Arnol VVorley, son of Judge Worley of th superior court, according to wil nesses who have returned to Andei son. There was much excitemen in Elberton this afternoon and Woi ley had to be rushed away to safetj Deputies Sheriff J Olin Sander and Jim Williams of Anderson wen to Elberton this morning to identif a negro there as one wanted by th authorities here. They returned thi afternoon, and as eyewitnesses gav an account of the trouble. This morning about 11 o'clock th deputies from Anderson and Sheril Hailey went to the Seaboard Ai Line railway depot and arrested th negro thought to be the one wanted They started back to the cour house, where an Anderson negro wa waiting who had been taken to Ei barton to identify the other negrc On the way to the court house th negro prisoner passed a lie to Sheri! Hailey and he in turn slapped th negro. Mr Worley saw this and i said to have reprimanded the Sherifl telling him that he had better cut i out. The Sheriff is said to have re plied that he wa3 attending to hi business and that he had better g on about his. Worley replied tha he would make it some of his busi ness. According to the report, nothin more was seen of Worley for abou one-half hour. While Sheriff Hai ley, Deputies Sanders and William and Johnson, assistant chief of pc lice, and Mr Brock and two othe men were sitting in the court house Worley walked in. It is said that h walked up. within about three fee of Sheriff Hailey when the Sheril arose and told Worley that he di not see the reason for Worley's cob duct earlier in the day. Worley i said to have pulled his pistol an fired twice at close range and begu backing toward the door. He cob tinued to shoot, according to th story here, three more shots beim fired, none of these taking effect Although mortally wounded Sheril Hailey fired at Worley three time as he was going out of the door None of these shots took effect Hailey expired within five minutes it is said, one of the bullets havini entered his ieft side just below th heart. In a vbry short time Worley start ed back into the court house bu was met by Deputy Sheriff Sanders who told him that he must not entei Policeman Johnson came up abou this time and placed Worley unde arrest. He was carried to the cit jail, but 80 many people began t gather and since there was talk o violence he was spirited away. I is thought he was taken to Athen or Atlanta. Hailey has been Sheriff of Elber county for the past several year and was only recently reelected fo four more years. He was ver; highly respected, and it is said h was a splendid officer. Worley is i young man about 30 years of ag and a member of the bar in Elbei ton. . v PRES. WILSON AT CHARLOTTE Speaks to 100,000 People at Meek lenburg Celebration.
